If someone were to ever tell me three years ago that mid-way through 2012, we?d still be suffering from lagging broadband connections, I would have rendered him crazy and the conversation would have ended there and then. And yet, whenever I?m playing FIFA 2012 or Modern Warfare 2, there?s always the fear in the back of my head that things are going to start jumping and sooner or later I?ll be disconnected from the game I was so much enjoying, through no fault of my own. Since our internet providers seem to be absolutely useless in aiding us with the perfect gaming experience, here are a few tips to help prevent your internet from lagging.
Pause All Uploads and Downloads
This is a well known trick but nonetheless one often ignored. Downloading and uploading content can seriously affect the efficiency and speed of your gaming experience. Your internet can only hold a certain amount of bandwidth and uploading and downloading material can take up a lot.
This means that if you have any torrents running, those programs should be closed.
Use an Ethernet Cable
Ethernet cables are the securest way of connecting to the internet. Wireless connection obviously depends on frequency and this means that it is easier for the connection to be interrupted than with Ethernet cables.
There is one problem with using an Ethernet cable however. If someone accidently trips over the wire or pulls it out, your connection?s gone! Therefore, make sure the Ethernet wire is placed out of people?s way.
Try to Use Your Mobile Phone Instead of a Headset
The more MB your internet connection amasses the harder it will be for you to stably connect. This is an old-school trick that some doesn?t believe works, but I?ve experienced it as a success. If you?re just looking to interact with a friend, then disconnect your headset and use a mobile phone.
Now I know what you?re thinking: mobile phone-calls cost money. But if you and your friend are on the same network you may be able to get a price plan that enables free calls between the two of you. There are many similar mobile deals around also that will allow you to replace your phone with your headset without it costing a penny.
Position Your Console Next to the Router (if Possible)
The logic behind this is simple and practical. If you?re using a wireless connection, positioning your router next to your console will ensure your connection is as strong as possible. When it comes to wireless internet connections, the further away your computer is, the weaker the connection.
