Kluwe says he's been released by Vikings

(AP) ? The Vikings released punter Chris Kluwe on Monday, bringing an end to his colorful and outspoken eight-year stay in Minnesota.

Kluwe announced the news on Twitter shortly after meeting with Vikings GM Rick Spielman, a move that had been expected ever since the team spent a fifth-round draft pick on punter Jeff Locke at the end of last month.

"Thank you to all the fans, my teammates, and the Wilf family for the past 8.5 years," Kluwe tweeted. "I wouldn't have traded it for anything."

The 31-year-old Kluwe averaged 44.4 yards per punt over his career in Minnesota, including a career-high 39.7 yard net average last season. But he ranked just 17th in the NFL in punting and was due to make $1.45 million this season, making him a prime target to be cut.

During his time with the Vikings, Kluwe earned a reputation as one of the most opinionated players in the league. He criticized union leadership during the lockout, wore a patch on his uniform to protest the lack of punters in the Hall of Fame and, most notably, became a vocal supporter of gay rights, penning a number of thoughtful, and occasionally profane, columns on the issue for various websites. He also plays in a rock band in his spare time and is an avid video gamer.

"And thank you everyone for your support," Kluwe tweeted. "Remember, one label does not define who you are as a person."

Kluwe's release means the league's two most vocal advocates for gay rights are now out of work. Linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo was cut by Baltimore in April.

Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer made it clear later last season that Kluwe's headline-grabbing nature was wearing thin with him. When Kluwe was fined more than $5,000 for putting a "Vote Ray Guy" over a patch on his jersey commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in December, Priefer voiced his displeasure.

"Those distractions are getting old for me, to be quite honest with you," Priefer said. "Do I think Ray Guy deserves to be in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely. But there's other ways of going about doing it, in my opinion."

When the Vikings drafted Locke, Spielman was asked if Kluwe's outspoken nature would factor at all into the decision to keep him or cut him.

"I have no issues if Chris Kluwe wants to express his opinion," Spielman said then. "That's his right. That's his freedom of speech. This is just a football decision to bring in a guy and come in and compete."

In the end, Kluwe didn't get much of a chance to compete. Locke attended the team's first rookie camp over the weekend, and Kluwe was out a few days later. It was a move similar to last season when the Vikings drafted kicker Blair Walsh in the sixth round and quickly released the more experienced, and more expensive, Ryan Longwell.

Also factoring into the decision is the Vikings will be playing their final season in the Metrodome before moving outdoors to the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank stadium while their new stadium is built. Kluwe seemed to have a more difficult time punting outdoors and the Vikings hope the move to the younger Locke will help them in that area.

Casinos Brace For Change as States Legalize Online Gambling ...

online-gamblingAtlantic City, N.J. ? With legal gambling now moving beyond the casinos and onto the Internet, the industry is bracing for the most far-reaching changes in its history.

A Las Vegas firm, Ultimate Gaming, on Tuesday became the first in the U.S. to offer online poker, restricting it, for now, to players in Nevada. New Jersey and Delaware also have legalized gambling over the Internet and expect to begin offering such bets by the end of this year.

And many inside and outside the industry say the recent position taken by the federal government that states are free to offer Internet gambling ? as long as it doesn?t involve sports betting ? will lead many cash-hungry state governments to turn to the Web as a new source of tax revenue.

Ten other states have considered some form of Internet gambling so far this year, but none have legalized it yet. Efforts to pass a national law legalizing online poker have sputtered, leaving states free to pass laws as they see fit.

?It?s no longer a question of if Internet gaming is coming; it?s a question of when,? said Frank Fahrenkopf, president of the American Gaming Association, the trade organization for the nation?s commercial brick-and-mortar casinos. ?Unless there is a federal bill passed, we are going to have the greatest expansion of legalized gambling in the United States. I don?t think that?s what anyone intended, but it is what we?re seeing.

The brave new world for gambling brings with it a host of questions and concerns. Will letting people bet online result in fewer visits to casinos, and therefore fewer dealers, beverage servers and hotel and restaurant workers at the casinos? Will Internet bets create a new revenue stream from new players, or will it simply redirect money from gamblers who otherwise would have visited a casino, and might have eaten dinner and seen a show, as well? And will it create even more problem gamblers?

Engineers manipulate a buckyball by inserting a single water molecule

May 6, 2013 ? Columbia Engineering researchers have developed a technique to isolate a single water molecule inside a buckyball, or C60, and to drive motion of the so-called "big" nonpolar ball through the encapsulated "small" polar H2O molecule, a controlling transport mechanism in a nanochannel under an external electric field. They expect this method will lead to an array of new applications, including effective ways to control drug delivery and to assemble C60-based functional 3D structures at the nanoscale level, as well as expanding our understanding of single molecule properties.

The study was published as a Physics Focus in the April 12 issue of Physical Review Letters.

"Buckyballs, more formally known as Buckminsterfullerenes, or fullerenes, are spherical, hollow molecular structures made of 60 carbon atoms, with the size of ~1 nm -- 6,000-8,000 times smaller than a regular red blood cell -- and, because of their highly symmetrical structure, very hydrophobic core, covalent nonpolar bonds, and more importantly, relatively non-toxicity to the human body, they are a perfect container for drug molecules," explains Xi Chen, associate professor of earth and environmental engineering, who led the research. He and his team believe their work is the first attempt to manipulate a nonpolar molecule (C60) or structure by an inserted polar molecule (H2O).

Chen says his findings may open a new way of controlling and delivering a nonpolar "big" molecule like C60 through the encapsulated "small" polar molecule like H2O. This could lead to important applications in nanotech and biotech areas, including drug delivery where researchers can "imprison" the polar drug molecules inside a hollow structure and then guide them to their targets.

And, from a fundamental point of view, he hopes that the isolated, encapsulated single molecule, like the H2O one in his study, will provide an important platform for revealing and probing inherent characteristics of a single molecule, free from its outside environment.

"The important role of hydrogen bonds in the properties of water, like surface tension and viscosity, and the precise interactions between a single water molecule and hydrogen bonds, are still unclear," Chen notes, "so our new technique to isolate a single water molecule free from any hydrogen bonds provides an opportunity for answering these questions."

Since the discovery of C60 in the 1980s, scientists have been trying to solve the challenge of controlling a single C60. Several mechanical strategies involving AFM (atomic force microscopy) have been developed, but these are costly and time-intensive. The ability to drive a single C60 through a simple external force field, such as an electrical or magnetic field, would be a major step forward.

In the Columbia Engineering study, the researchers found that, when they encapsulated a polar molecule within a nonpolar fullerene, they could use an external electrical field to transport the molecule@fullerene structures to desired positions and adjust the transport velocity so that both delivery direction and time were controllable. Chen's team came up with the idea a year ago, and confirmed their surprising results through extensive atomistic simulations.

Chen plans to explore more properties of the H2O@C60 molecule and other similar structures, and to continue probing the interaction and communication of the encapsulated single water molecule with its surroundings. "Studying the communication of an imprisoned single water molecule with its outside environment such as adjacent molecules," he adds, "is like learning how a person sitting inside a room makes connections with friends outside, selectively on demand (i.e. with control) or randomly (without control) through, say, over the phone."

90% of Parents Multitask While Driving

Parents hope their children won't text and drive, but a new study suggests many parents are guilty of multitasking behind the wheel.

The results show about 90 percent of parents surveyed reported technology-related multitasking while driving their children in the past month, such as talking on the phone, texting or changing a DVD or CD.

Other types of multitasking were also common: About 70 percent reported performing childcare duties while driving, such as feeding their child or picking up a dropped toy, and 70 percent reported engaging in self-care, such as grooming or eating.

What's more, multitasking was more common among parents who'd reported being in a car accident at some point in their lives compared with those who'd never been in a crash, the researchers said.

"Lots of attention has been given to distracted teen drivers. However, our results indicate parents are frequently distracted while driving," study researcher Dr. Michelle Macy, of the University of Michigan, said in a statement.

The researchers surveyed more than 600 parents whose children were treated at two emergency departments in Michigan for any reason. The children were ages 1 to 12.

About half of parents said they had driven while trying to find directions, by using a map or a GPS device while driving.

Texting was the least common distraction, with just a little over 10 percent of parents reporting texting while driving their children in the past month.

Parents were also asked what type of safety restraints they used for their children, and researchers considered whether the safety restraint was appropriate for the children's age (for instance, whether they used a car seat for children under age 3, or seat belts for those ages 8 to 12).

Parents who did not use the appropriate type of safety restraint were more likely to report driving while distracted than those who used the appropriate safety restraints for their children.

"Our research has identified some high-impact areas to improve child passenger safety," Macy said.

The study will be presented today (May 6) at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in Washington, DC.

Pass it on: Multitasking while driving is common among parents.

The Great California Cycleway That Never Was

Bikes are a great way to get around, and before cars, they were even more crucial. They were so popular, in fact, that in the late 1890s, plans were put in place for a grand bicycle highway that would take riders from Pasadena to Los Angeles, but it was never able to make it to its destination.

Outgoing Alibaba CEO Ma says he's 'old' for Web

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) ? Alibaba founder Jack Ma, the billionaire who has run the Chinese e-commerce giant since 1999, says he's getting "a bit old" for the Internet.

That's what the outgoing chief executive told a charitable event in Santa Monica Thursday as he pledged $5 million toward a China-based fund that supports environmental conservation projects outside China.

"I'm young for new things but I'm a bit old for the Internet," the 48-year-old said.

Ma's gift doubles the amount raised for the China Global Conservation Fund, an offshoot of the Arlington, Va.-based organization, The Nature Conservancy.

Ma steps down as CEO from Alibaba Group on May 10, ahead of a widely expected initial public offering of stock that could create a windfall for Yahoo Inc., which owns nearly a quarter of the company.

Ma said that he prepared for his retirement for the last nine years and is looking forward to working on philanthropic causes such as environmental conservation.

He said he was inspired to act after visiting his home in China six years ago. A lake he nearly drowned in as a boy had mostly dried up. He also spoke to a farmer who used chemicals on produce that he wouldn't feed his family. "I know something is wrong," Ma said.

Ma will chair the Chinese board overseeing the fund once he steps down as CEO.

(AP) ? It was a party atmosphere along Barack Obama's motorcade route from the airport after he arrived in this Central American country for his first visit as president.

Thousands of locals, who are known as "Ticos," lined the road to welcome their fourth visiting American president. The most recent one to visit was Bill Clinton in 1997.

Municipal employees were given the day off to ease traffic.

Some of those who lined the roadway ? two and three people deep ? waved American flags. Others held homemade signs, including one that said "Fired Up!" ? a reference to Obama's campaign slogan. More crowds gathered along the route between Obama's hotel and Casa Amarilla, the headquarters for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including hundreds of students in school uniforms.

"We're very happy to welcome our big brother," said retiree Ricardo Marin, 62, explaining the jubilant mood. "We hope they don't neglect us, that this visit will help our country."

Obama's reception here was vastly different from Mexico. There was no major crowd presence for Obama's travels in Mexico City on Thursday and Friday.

___

Excitement over Obama's visit wasn't shared widely, however.

"I had to walk more than a mile to get to my job," grumbled Luis Humberto Rodriguez Burgos, 26, who sells cellphones in the city center, which was shuttered and empty. "There are no clients, no tourists and we're losing money. Clearly if they close the city for a foreign president, that's not going to improve my working conditions, nor help me feed my children."

___

Obama and Costa Rica's president, Laura Chincilla, strolled to a courtyard at Casa Amarilla, or Yellow House, after they met and were greeted by about 100 schoolchildren, ranging in age from about 7 to 16. All were in uniform, and the younger ones waved U.S. and Costa Rican flags. Obama wore a broad grin as he stood encircled by the singing students.

They sang "I'm Tico" and "The First Time I Saw Limon," a reference to a city on the country's Caribbean coast.

As the children sang, thunder roared in the distance and the wind picked up.

___

After the songs, Obama praised the students, calling them "brave" and their performances "very good." He also asked for their names.

The students gushed as Obama invited them to pose for photos.

"What do we say?" he asked.

The students and Chinchilla said: "Cheese." Obama responded with, "Queso!" the Spanish word for cheese.

___

Obama opened his day by making his second visit to Mexico City's soaring, modernistic National Museum of Anthropology.

"Each time that I come, I've been inspired," he told a predominantly student audience.

Of course, last time he may have narrowly avoided getting sick.

In April 2009, Obama was he honored guest at a state dinner at the museum ? just as the global swine flu outbreak was first surfacing in Mexico. Ultimately, the H1N1 strain killed thousands of people worldwide.

Obama never came down with the H1N1 flu. However, a security aide of his did ? and passed it on to family members in the U.S.
