Police extend phone-hacking probe to computers (AFP)
LONDON (AFP) ? Police investigating phone hacking at the News of the World were set Saturday to extend their probe into claims that computers were hacked, in a fresh threat to Rupert Murdoch's embattled empire.
The Metropolitan police said late Friday it was establishing a new team of officers to examine claims which emerged during its current phone-hacking investigation that computers may have also been illegally accessed.
The move heaped further pressure on Murdoch's embattled News Corp. conglomerate the same day an investigator at the heart of the controversy said he acted on orders from News of the World (NotW), axed this month as the scandal erupted.
Private detective Glenn Mulcaire's comments are a challenge to claims by Murdoch's empire that he was a rogue operator.
Meanwhile a parliamentary committee said it had ordered Murdoch's son and heir apparent James to give written clarification of answers he gave on the scandal last week.
Murdoch has been struggling for weeks to stem the spiralling scandal, which has dragged in police and politicians and spread to the United States and Australia.
But there was little sign Saturday that the crisis was about to die down, with police laying the ground to start probing allegations of computer hacking.
An inquiry, Operation Tuleta, was "currently considering a number of allegations regarding breach of privacy... including computer hacking" that were not covered by the current phone-hacking probe, Scotland Yard said in a statement.
A team was being established to look into the claims and "some aspects of this operation will move forward to a formal investigation," said the statement.
The police have faced fierce criticism over their failure to properly investigate hacking allegations during an initial probe in 2006.
That investigation led to the jailing of the NotW's royal editor and Mulcaire in 2007 but despite mounting evidence that hacking was more widespread than the paper originally claimed, the police only revived the probe this year.
Two top officers have been forced to resign over the scandal along with several top Murdoch aides.
Elsewhere, Mulcaire's intervention focused attention back on the issue of how much key figures at News Corp. knew about hacking.
In a statement issued by his lawyers, Mulcaire expressed "sincere regret" but he added that he was "effectively employed" by the paper from 2002.
"Any suggestion that he acted in such matters unilaterally is untrue," the statement said.
He spoke a day after the mother of a murdered eight-year-old girl said police had confirmed her details were found among his papers. Claims that he hacked the phone of a murdered 13-year-old ignited the scandal earlier this month.
Rebekah Brooks, editor of the News of the World from 2000-2003, and her successor until 2007, Andy Coulson, have both denied authorising any phone hacking or knowing that the practice was being used by their staff.
Brooks and Coulson, who went on to become Prime Minister David Cameron's media chief until January this year, have since been arrested.
James and Rupert Murdoch, along with Brooks, who quit as chief executive of News Corp.'s British newspaper wing News International earlier this month, answered questions from parliament's media committee on July 19.
Committee chairman John Whittingdale said Friday that he would be writing to James Murdoch about his testimony to the committee and that "the chances are" he would be recalled to clarify his evidence.
Ex-NotW editor Colin Myler and legal manager Tom Crone last week said James Murdoch gave misleading evidence about how much he knew about the extent of hacking at the paper when he authorised a payout to a victim in 2008.
It was at that hearing that the 80-year-old Rupert Murdoch was hit in the face with a plateful of shaving foam by comedian Jonathan May-Bowles.
May-Bowles, 26, whose stage name is Jonnie Marbles, pleaded guilty Friday at City of Westminster Magistrates Court to assault and to causing harassment, alarm or distress. A judge told him he faces jail when sentenced on Tuesday.
James Murdoch has also faced calls to quit his chairmanship of pay-TV giant BSkyB. But his position was strengthened Friday when the company posted bumper operating profits of ?1.073 billion in the 12 months to June, up 23 percent on the previous year.
The Times meanwhile reported Saturday that Prince William expressed disappointment to James Murdoch and Brooks that no one from News International had apologised to him after his aides' phones were hacked several years ago.
During a lunch meeting in January at a north Wales hotel, Murdoch and Brooks reportedly offered their apologies to him.

F-16 Flies Off Runway At Wisconsin Air Show, Pilot Uninjured (VIDEO)
An F-16 taxiing after landing at the Experimental Aircraft Association's AirVenture Convention in Oshkosh, Wis. on Thursday ran off the end of the runway and dug its nose into a grass field, tossing up dirt and startling spectators but leaving the pilot unharmed, according to WLUK-TV Fox 11.
The pilot of the F-16, who WITI-TV Fox 6 reports is with the Alabama Air National Guard, walked away from from the aircraft. He was taken to the hospital but later released.

Palestinians storm home of ex-strongman Dahlan (AFP)
RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories (AFP) ? Scores of Palestinian police on Thursday raided the Ramallah home of ex-strongman Mohammed Dahlan who is under investigation for murder and corruption.
Witnesses in Ramallah's Al-Tirah neighbourhood said a large number of police and security forces had surrounded his home at 7:00 am (0400 GMT) before forcing their way in and arresting around 10 of his bodyguards.
They were also seen removing weapons, files and computers from his house, as well as the former internal security minister's two bullet-proof cars.
Dahlan, who continues to hold parliamentary immunity as an elected member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, was understood to have been locked in a room of his house while security forces conducted the searches.
A neighbour told AFP he heard security forces checking weapons in the house.
"I heard loud noises of weapons being checked and examined and I think they were weapons that were confiscated from Dahlan's house and they were being checked to make sure they did not have bullets in them," he said.
By 9:30 am (0630 GMT), the raid on the house was over, witnesses said, but police forces continued to surround the residence, controlling the flow of people into the house. Dahlan was apparently still inside the house.
Last month, Dahlan was expelled from the ruling body of president Mahmud Abbas's Fatah party over allegations of financial corruption and murder.
The raid was launched a day after officials at the Fatah Central Committee (FCC) said they had decided to refer his case to the attorney general and the anti-corruption commission.
Also on Wednesday, a Fatah court rejected an appeal by Dahlan against his expulsion from the party.
In its ruling, the court found that a June 12 decision by the FCC to expel Dahlan from the party was justified, thereby overturning his appeal, court official Jamal Muheisen told AFP.
The FCC decision to expel him must now be approved by a two-thirds majority of the Fatah Revolutionary Council.
Last month, the FCC had also backed a decision to extend the mandate of the committee probing Dahlan's affairs, allowing to look into the affairs of his friends and associates.
Dahlan, who once held the internal security portfolio and was head of Gaza's powerful security forces, was formerly a leading figure within the secular Fatah movement which controls the Palestinian Authority.
Known for his fierce opposition to the Islamist Hamas movement, Dahlan led a merciless crackdown on the group in the 1990s, rounding up thousands of Islamists who refused to recognise the legitimacy of the newly-created Palestinian Authority.
But he fell from grace in June 2007 after the humiliating rout of his forces by Hamas fighters during days of fierce street battles in Gaza, which saw the Islamist faction expel Fatah forces from the territory.
Two years later, he returned to the political stage when he was elected to the FCC in August 2009.
But in December 2010, he was suspended from the committee which said it had set up a commission of inquiry to examine his finances and claims he tried to set up a personal militia.

Iraqi Kurdistan bans female genital mutilation (AFP)
BAGHDAD (AFP) ? Human Rights Watch on Tuesday welcomed a draft law banning female genital mutilation by the regional government in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The Family Violence Bill approved June 21 by the autonomous government includes several provisions criminalising the practice in Kurdistan, HRW, said, adding that prevalence of FGM among girls and women in Kurdistan "is at least 40 percent."
"By passing this law, the Kurdistan regional government has shown its resolve to end female genital mutilation and to protect the rights of women and girls," said Nadya Khalife, Middle East women's rights researcher at Human Rights Watch.
"But the government needs a long-term strategy to deal with this harmful practice because criminalising it is not enough," she said in a statement.
The bill has to be ratified by the regional president, Massud Barzani.
The draft law criminalises FGM, penalising medical professionals and midwives who "instigate, assist, or carry out" the procedure. Criminal penalties include prison terms ranging from six months to three years, in addition to fines of up to $8,500.
Shortly after HRW issued a June 2010 report about FGM, the Kurdistan Health Ministry surveyed 5,000 women and girls and found that 41 percent had undergone the procedure, and that the practice is more prevalent in some regions than others in Kurdistan, the statement said.
It quoted a 2010 finding by the Association for Crisis Assistance and Development Co-operation, a German-Iraqi human rights non-governmental organisation, that out of the 1,408 girls and women aged 14 and over interviewed, 72.7 percent had undergone FGM.
For the 12 to 24 age group, the prevalence was slightly over 40 percent, the report found.

Serb war crimes fugitive may have hidden in Russia (Reuters)
BELGRADE (Reuters) ? Serbia's last major war crimes suspect was able to evade capture thanks to a network of hardliners and may have spent time in Russia, according to the country's president and investigators.
Goran Hadzic could be transferred to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague Friday afternoon, his lawyer said. He confirmed the 52-year-old had fathered a child with a woman who was not his wife during his years on the run.
"He will be transferred to The Hague after his families visit today and tomorrow. It could happen from Friday afternoon," Toma Fila said Thursday.
Hadzic, a Croatian Serb wartime leader, was indicted for crimes against humanity during the 1991-95 Croatian war.
Serbian security officials arrested him Wednesday on a forest road in the Fruska Gora national park region about 65 km (40 miles) north of Belgrade.
"He did not resist arrest, he froze for a moment when he saw the arrest team," said a state security operative who did not want to be named. "He had a handgun but didn't reach for it."
Officials believe Hadzic had spent at least part of his time on the run in Russia and had investigated electronic payments linked to him, the operative said.
Serbian President Boris Tadic said authorities would use military intelligence and state security agencies to unmask a network of hardliners who had helped war crime suspects evade justice.
"The intelligence community is now largely purged of major operatives who were tied to (ex-President Slobodan) Milosevic's regime, but they retained their old networks and contacts," the operative said.
"For example, we want to see who was responsible for supplying fugitives with identification papers and travel documents."
The operative said Hadzic's network of helpers "was likely comprised of people involved in murky dealings" in the 1990s when Serbia was an international pariah.
"His business buddies and wartime comrades from Milosevic's secret service and underworld were the core of his network; there's little ideology in his case," the official said.
"Hadzic's trial will be interesting, because if he speaks out, many people, some still active, may land in jail for a myriad of crimes."
Although Hadzic was among the less prominent ethnic Serb wartime leaders, he came into greater focus as the final suspect sought by the United Nations war crimes tribunal after the arrest in May of wartime Serb General Ratko Mladic.
The European Union has insisted on the arrest of all war crimes suspects for Belgrade to progress toward eventual membership of the bloc. EU leaders were quick to hail Serbia for arresting Hadzic, a key figure in the breakaway wartime Krajina Serb republic in Croatia.

Serbia's war crimes prosecutor had said Wednesday that a stolen painting thought to be by Italian figurative artist Amedeo Modigliani gave investigators an essential clue to Hadzic's whereabouts.
Hadzic's lawyer denied Thursday that his client had anything to do with such a work of art.
"There is no Modigliani: he neither tried to sell or sold one," Fila said. "If he had sold such art, they would never have found him. This is the best proof that the Modigliani does not exist."
Experts were uncertain if the painting in question -- a portrait of a man -- was real or fake, stolen or legitimately owned.
"It is difficult to ascertain whether the painting is original without expertise from appropriate institutions from abroad who study Modigliani," said Petar Petrovic, a curator with the Serbian National Museum.

Video confession shown in Ark. soldier death trial (AP)
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? Jurors in the capital murder trial of a man charged with shooting two soldiers in Little Rock two years ago watched a video on Thursday of him confessing to police.
In the video recorded after his arrest, Abdulhakim Muhammad sat un-handcuffed in a police interrogation room and told detectives he shot the uniformed soldiers outside of a Little Rock military recruiting station after watching a video about a Muslim woman being raped. One of the soldiers died.
"I just made up my mind to retaliate," Muhammad said in the video.
In court on Thursday, the 26-year-old Muhammad looked down for a few moments while the video was being played. He is charged with capital murder for killing Pvt. William Andrew Long and attempted capital murder for wounding Pvt. Quinton Ezeagwula in 2009.
He has admitted to the shootings, but says he was justified because of U.S. military action in the Middle East. His defense lawyers say he is mentally ill, though he and prosecutors disagree. If they can't win his acquittal, Muhammad's attorneys hope to keep him off death row.
Tom Hudson, a Little Rock police detective, testified that the officers who questioned Muhammad did not keep him in handcuffs during the interrogation because he was well-behaved.
"I don't have anything against police," Muhammad said in the video. "It's just the Army."
In court Thursday, Ezeagwula wore the same type of Army fatigues he had worn the day of the shooting, even though Muhammad's father, Melvin Bledsoe, had asked the judge not to allow anyone to testify in uniform.

Fedak: Chuck having the Intersect, it was like, "Please get it out of my head. I want my life back." Morgan thinks it's the beginning of only awesome things. Morgan is incredibly stoked to have the Intersect inside of him. Here's a guy who for years has been Chuck's best friend. Chuck has helped out Morgan so many times and saved his bacon from the fifth grade on, and that is their relationship. And now Morgan is the guy who has the supercomputer in his head and has all these abilities, so he's jazzed and excited to be on the team and to be a part of it. He just wants to be a spy right now.
What sort of concerns were there for giving Morgan the Intersect? Some fans weren't too pleased with the decision.
Fedak: I think there's always a degree of anxiety when you mess around with the bones of the show and the archetypes. Going into Season 5, we think it's neat to change things up so that Chuck doesn't have the Intersect now. He has to be a spy without the supercomputer training wheels. He has to go back to being the smartest guy in the room, having the Chuck solution. And now he has a friend who has the supercomputer in his head, and Chuck has become sort of like Sarah was: He has to become Morgan's handler. He's the one who has been out there in the world and now must take care of Morgan. And they still need the Intersect to get out of problems and be a successful company.
Will Chuck try to find a way to get the Intersect back for himself?
Fedak: Hmm, I may not be able to answer that, but I would think he certainly thinks about it. Absolutely.

Fedak: The show is also about family so certainly Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) will be part of the show. Chuck's the spy who never wanted to leave. James Bond left. Most heroes don't have always have a family, whereas Chuck is the guy who didn't want to leave his family and his sister and his brother-in-law and now his niece. So the Bartowski family is certainly going to be part of the show.

Fedak: Most important is Chuck and Sarah building a future together, that idea of the Bartowskis trying to imagine what their future is going to be. And they're building a company, a spy company. Chuck needs to create his own successful private CIA. The other part of it too is the relationship between Chuck and Morgan -- all things evolve. Now they're working in the same company together, it's also about their friendship. All these things are challenges. I think that going out on their own is very much a part of this season. One, what happens when you don't have the Intersect? And two, what happens when you don't have the CIA and their resources?
Will the show jump ahead in time to establish their new spy agency?
Fedak: There will be a time jump, a few months. You'll definitely get a feel for the new spy agency. There will be a new version of Castle. There aren't any new employees yet, but they are looking to hire. They will be looking to expand at some point.
Will there still be crossover with the CIA? Will we see General Beckham (Wendy Makkena) again?
Fedak: Well, when you're in the spy world, it's hard not to get involved with the CIA. There will certainly be crosses, and we will see General Beckham again.
How much will we see the Buy More? And will we be seeing a farewell performance courtesy of Jeffster?
Fedak: There certainly will be activity with the Buy More. Chuck and Sarah now own the Buy More so it's become a part of their portfolio as the new Carmichael Industries. And since they've got new spy company, they will look at the Buy More as a profit center. So it's important that the Buy More be a successful store. Jeffster lives, let me put it that way.
NBC renews Chuck for fifth and final season
How will Sarah be changed this season? Now that she's married to Chuck, she's no longer the unattainable girl.
Fedak: There are two things. For years, she has been a person who's been a committed spy and excellent at her job. Now being married to Chuck and running this company, people's dreams begin to change. Watching her evolve over the four seasons so far and going into the fifth season, is seeing how she becomes more of a human being. But I do think that there is still a part of her that will always be unattainable. Even though Chuck lives with her, there are parts of Sarah that are still unattainable, secrets and thoughts. I think that's part of Yvonne's performance and all the character that we find so endearing and why Chuck loves her.
Will she have the biological clock ticking, that glint in her eye? Will she start having conversations about a baby Bartowski?
Fedak: It's certainly something our characters would consider and talk about. It does not make for the sexiest spy missions, though, is all I'll say. I had to deal with so many pregnancies -- real and fake -- last year though, so I might be out of the pregnancy game for a little bit.
Like Sarah, Casey's also evolved to be a bit more human over four seasons. How will that continue?
Fedak: We had a lot of fun last year with Casey (Adam Baldwin) and the story with his daughter Alex. That's something that we definitely play into this season. The fact that Morgan is dating Alex and that Morgan has the Intersect, and Casey is obviously fond of Morgan in his own sort of weird "slap to the back of the head" way -- all that's something we explore. Casey is dealing with all of these father and friend, human feelings that he's not used to.
Casey needs some love! What sort of chances are there for a romance this season?
Fedak: I would say that as a fan of Adam Baldwin, I am most excited for the idea of having him in a torrid romance. There's certainly a chance.

What sorts of blasts from the past have you guys discussed returning to the show? What dream plots will you try to fit into this last season?
Fedak: I'd love to do that. There are so many characters that I enjoy from our past. We're working right now on some very big stories. We've put together such a great cast over the years that I'd love to bring them back. We only starting getitng casting now for the first episode, so I don't have anything to tell you yet. We have a bunch of ideas, but I don't want to give you our spy world-type things . We don't want to get to the end of the year and think, "Oh, we should have done this." That always happens at the end of any season.
Will there be a happy ending for Chuck and his friends?
Fedak: We have an ending in mind. I won't give away if it's a happy ending or not. It's something that we're building to. For the writers on the show, we have a unique opportunity to close out story and tell our final chapter. You don't always get that opportunity on television so we're excited to build out the most exciting, the most dramatic version of an ending for the show that we can possibly imagine.
How long have you kept in mind this ending? Was this something you brought to NBC to get the fifth season?
Fedak: We started to think about it at the end of last year. As we were starting to build the final for Season 4 and we knew there was a possibility for a Season 5, we started thinking about where we would take Season 5 and what the ending would be. We certainly went in and pitched them Season 5.
How action-packed will the finale be?
Fedak: I would certainly say that it would be action-y. We probably won't bring back the Nighthawk, but we'll have something. Listen, I loved the motorcycle. It was an interesting departure. All of a sudden we were in a different TV show. I loved that.
Have there been discussions of someone important to Chuck dying this season? Has this been a consideration?
Fedak: All I'll say to that is, "Hmm ..."
Chuck's final season will take over Friday nights beginning on Oct. 21 at 8/7c on NBC.
