Hamels ignores Harper to toss gem

BOX SCORE

It was supposed to be the Phillie vs. the Phenom. Cole Hamels vs. Bryce Harper. Lingering bad blood between two budding rivals.

That was the buildup to Wednesday night's matchup, the first between the two players since Hamels admitted he intentionally plunked the Nationals' burgeoning star on May 6. All eyes were on the lefthanded pitcher and lefthanded hitter every time Harper stepped to the plate.

Nothing materialized.

Hamels was too tuned in on the business at hand -- ending another Phillies skid. He pitched Harper ? who finished 1 for 3 with an impressive eight-pitch walk ? the same as he did Jesus Flores. The same as he did Ian Desmond.

"Ultimately I had nine guys I had to face," Hamels said after again putting the Phillies back on the right track. "[The incident] wasn't even in the back of my mind."

What was on his mind was shutting down the Nationals. The Phillies' 2012 ace pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out eight to put a stop to the team's season-high four-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the division rival Washington Nationals (see Instant Replay). The Phillies avoided a sweep at home.

"Without a doubt, he's been big for us," manager Charlie Manuel said. "Tonight was big for us. We needed to win a game. We're going to win some more. We're not going anywhere."

"You never want to get swept at home," outfielder Hunter Pence said. "Never."

On a team with Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee pocketing the biggest paychecks and top billing, it has been Hamels (7-1) that has been the Phillies' best and most consistent pitcher this season. Halladay and Lee have a combined four wins in 16 starts. Hamels has seven in 10 starts.

Wednesday night was also the third time this season that Hamels has stopped a Phillies losing streak. Not even a little pregame hype was going to affect the red-hot lefty, who has won seven straight decisions and is 7-0 with a 1.89 ERA in the eight starts since losing his season opener.

"Ultimately, if we won 20 in a row I'm going out there with the same sort of emphasis as if we lost 20 in a row," Hamels said. "Ultimately, I like to win. I don't like to lose. I know in order to get ready for a game, I have my routine and I stick with it no matter what the circumstances are or how we're playing."

The Phillies had been playing poorly. Wednesday's series finale might have been one of their cleanest games of the season. They used good pitching, fielding (two spectacular plays ? a throw home from right by Pence and an over-the-shoulder catch by shortstop Freddy Galvis ? saved runs), small ball (a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Juan Pierre) and the long ball to beat the first-place Nationals.

"We played good," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We played good defense. We scored some runs. We executed and got some ribbies."

Shane Victorino hit a home run. Carlos Ruiz, batting cleanup for the first time in his career, had three hits and a run scored. Mike Fontenot had a pair of hits out of the eight-hole. And, most importantly, Hamels did his job on the mound. Dominantly. The Nationals didn't get their first hit until the sixth inning.

Hamels, an impending free agent, lowered his ERA to a minuscule 2.17. He leads the majors with seven victories. In his contract year, he's pitched better than ever before in the regular season.

"He's better now because he has that cutter," said Pierre, who studied the scouting report on Hamels for several years when he was with the Marlins. "He didn't have that cutter when I faced him. He's just mature now. When I first started facing him he was a younger guy, always poised, but now you just see the maturity level in him coming out."

The total package is going to land Hamels a hefty new deal. With every solid outing, his price tag could be increasing. It's still not a thought he's taken to the mind.

"I'm just playing the game as best I know, take it one pitch at a time, one inning at a time," Hamels said. "I'm not really thinking about that sort of big picture because it's not fair to my teammates, the organization or obviously the fans if you think about the other causes of the baseball world.

"I'm here right now and ultimately trying to win for my teammates, the fans and the organization."

So far, he's been successful. Not even a little Bryce Harper controversy can stand in his way.

A New Study of BRCA1 and BRCA2 in Breast Cancer Patients from ...

There?s a growing amount of information about the extent to which inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations play a role in breast and ovarian cancer risk in Asia.? A new paper adds to the available information for patients in Thailand and Pakistan.

In this international study, Dr. Fabienne Lesueur and colleagues studied a total of 207 breast cancer patients from Pakistan and Thailand.

  • The 77 Pakistani patients were from a Hospital-based series of breast cancer cases in Balochistan province
  • The 130 Thai patients were selected for early-onset breast cancer (121) or a breast cancer family history (9) such that the median age of breast cancer onset was in the mid-30s for this group

In the researchers? analysis combining the two groups of patients there were a total of 10 clearly deleterious mutations in the 207 breast cancer patients (there were 2 mutations that were each found in 2 patients).? Four of the 8 distinct mutations were in BRCA1, and four were in BRCA2.?

Four of the 77 patients from Pakistan (5.2%) had clearly deleterious mutations even though there was no selection of the cases studied for age or family history.

For the patients from Thailand, a total of 6 individuals out of 130 (4.6%) had a clearly deleterious mutation.

They also identified a number of variants of uncertain clinical signficance in the two genes.

Bottom Line from this Study Focused on BRCA1 and BRCA2 in Pakistan and Thailand

1. In the series of breast cancer patients from Pakistan, who were unselected for age of onset or family history, approximately 5 percent were found to have deleterious BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.

2. A similar percentage of individuals with deleterious mutations was found in the women with breast cancer from Thailand (who were primarily selected for this study based on early age of onset of breast cancer).

3. Because the researchers used mutation identification techniques* that do not identify all mutations and rearrangements in the genes, it is likely that the true frequency is actually somewhat higher than they reported.

* high-resolution melting curve analysis followed up by Sanger sequencing

Astrodome fades, crumbles as Houston decides fate - KWQC-TV6 ...

By CHRIS DUNCAN and RAMIT PLUSHNICK-MASTI
Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) - The Astrodome, a now-empty showplace that has hosted everyone from Elvis Presley to Hurricane Katrina evacuees, should be turned into a multipurpose facility that could spark fresh interest in the city of Houston, a group of consultants recommended Wednesday.

The $270 million option was one of four considered by consultants led by Dallas-based CSL. The other options included leaving the dome alone, demolishing it and building an outdoor plaza, or building a massive and expensive "renaissance" complex anchored by a luxury hotel.

In a presentation to Harris County's sports and convention agency, the consultants said the multipurpose option could turn Houston into a popular destination for special events and national trade shows. The plan would preserve the iconic structure's outer shell.

Bill Rhoda, CSL's president, said the multipurpose facility proposal "recognizes the magnitude of potential opportunities offered by this one-of-a-kind structure."

The reconfigured dome would have more than 300,000 square feet available for trade shows, exhibitions and various sporting events, including basketball and football games.

Rhoda said the multipurpose facility could be finished by 2016, when nearby Reliant Stadium hosts the Final Four in men's basketball, and help make Houston more attractive for any bid to host the 2017 Super Bowl at the stadium. Rhoda also said the multipurpose facility leaves open the possibility of revisiting the renaissance option in the future.

"It provides additional flexibility for being able to attract a variety of events," Rhoda said. "It adds the ability to move toward the Super Bowls and the Final Fours of the world, and get those events to Houston."

The recommendation now goes to the Harris County commissioners, who can review the details at their next capital projects meeting on June 26. There is no known timeline for a decision, and the dome's future could in theory be put before voters someday.

"Under the multipurpose facility, the days of the Astrodome exclusively as a sports facility are over," said Edgar Colon, chairman of the Harris County Convention and Sports Corporation. "It will be sports facilities-plus."

The Astrodome was closed for good in 2008. On a tour taken this week by an Associated Press reporter, piles of boxes littered the stadium floor alongside a crumpled mat of synthetic football field. Trash was strewn around the stands under the torn seats, mold was on the walls and dimly lit corridors were filled with a pungent, musty odor.

State-of-the-art Reliant Stadium was opened next door in 2002, and the Astrodome quickly became nothing more than a hulking relic of the city's past and a drain on taxpayers, costing between $2 million and $4 million in maintenance and insurance costs annually. In July 2010, the corporation commissioned a study to decide the building's fate, and an online survey showed overwhelming public support for the ambitious "renaissance" option.

Rhoda said the consultants determined that option would cost about $385 million, and the county would have to find a private investor to build the hotel.

"It does provide the opportunity for third-party development," Rhoda said. "It could create a regional destination. However, at this point, it's not economically viable."

Opened in 1965, the Astrodome was a revolutionary building in more ways than one. It was the first multi-purpose domed stadium and the first building of its size with air conditioning. An 18-story building can stand underneath its translucent roof and Walt Disney, according to local legend, was so blown away when he stood inside that he dubbed it the Eighth Wonder of the World.

Presley, Muhammad Ali, Evel Kneivel and the Rolling Stones all performed there, and it was the site of circuses, bullfights, polo matches, Major League Baseball's first indoor game, a Republican National Convention and the world's largest indoor rodeo.

It had luxury suites, food and beer served at clean Formica counters, comfortable press boxes and cushioned seats. The original plan called for natural grass on the field, but it couldn't grow under the skylights after they were painted to reduce glare for athletes. At one point, when the grass turned brown, groundskeepers painted it green. Plastic AstroTurf debuted in 1966 as the first artificial playing surface.

The Astrodome hosted the "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King, college basketball's "Game of the Century" between Houston and UCLA in 1968 and WrestleMania before Katrina forced thousands of people inside in 2005.

"It was an amazing structure at its time," said Mark Miller, general manager of the corporation, which oversees the Astrodome, Reliant Stadium and other complexes on a 340-acre campus.

"People were coming from all over the world to see the Astrodome. It was that significant. People like Frank Sinatra, Walt Disney, John Wayne," Miller added. "It seems commonplace now, but for its time, being the first, it was just incredible."

Other cities followed with their own domes: the Kingdome in Seattle, now gone; the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla.; Minneapolis' Metrodome; and New Orleans' Superdome, considered bigger and better than the Astrodome.

"Eventually, it's always about money," said Bob Bluthardt, former chairman of the ballparks research committee at the Society for American Baseball Research. "And the Astrodome went from being state-of-the-art to being obsolete in barely a generation."

John Pastier, an architect who wrote the 2006 book "Historic Ballparks," agreed.

"The fixed dome had a certain period of currency and then was replaced by retractable domes," he said.

The NFL's Houston Oilers left for Tennessee in the 1990s. Baseball's Houston Astros wanted their own stadium, so they built Minute Maid Park with a retractable roof. The NFL's Texans also got a new retractable-roof stadium - Reliant - that opened in 2002.

Since then, the Astrodome hasn't turned a profit.

Rhoda said the consultants also recommended replacing nearby - and also decaying - Reliant Arena, a tiny, inadequate indoor arena across a parking lot from the Astrodome. The consultants recommended building a new 10,000-seat arena, along with adding a 2,500-space parking garage and exhibition space around the Astrodome itself.

That proposal also included a hotel, with a total cost to the county of about $385 million. Miller said that option could be considered separately from the Astrodome's future - and may even be the more urgent priority for county commissioners.

"They could vote on one and not the other," Miller said. "They can do a multitude of things. It's totally up to them."

Tips On Buying An Air Cylinder | Industrial Mechanical

How to buy an air cylinder, what to look for and other related information.

Shopping for an air cylinder may sound like an easy and quick task when you look at it from the outside. But the moment that you go to buy one of these you will realize that everything has changed right before your eyes. When it comes time to make a buying decision you have to get on the right track or risk being left out in the dark without the item that you need. Fortunately, if you know what goes into buying an air cylinder you can make the most of the process and eventually get the perfect one.

The first thing you should do is shop around online. You will find that air cylinders are on sale at many different outlets. Along with this, there are quite a few companies that sell these including Parker, Bimba, and SMC. As you move along you will realize that some of these companies are better suited to match your needs than the others. This is a matter of preference, and of course, what you are hoping to buy. Just because you purchase an SMC air cylinder does not mean that this is the right choice for every other consumer.

What price are you looking to pay? This helps to make things much easier on you. Again, some companies are more expensive than others. You want to search around and compare many options so you can end up spending what you want, yet still getting the perfect cylinder. Price is not everything, but your budget will definitely dictate what you end up with.

What are you using it for? Will you need any pneumatic accessories to go along with it, such as a pneumatic air canon? It is one thing to know who sells cylinders, but another entirely to get the one that is right for your use. Some people buy these for industrial jobs, which might require a high pressure cylinder, while others are using them to build some sort of leisure item. Obviously, your use is going to have a lot to say about the type of cylinder that you end up purchasing.

When you buy any type of cylinder you need to make sure that the decision you make is one that you can live with now and into the future. Do you think you have the knowledge to buy the right unit sometime in the near future? If you have ever made a purchase in the past you probably know what you are doing and where you should turn. On the other hand, if this is new to you make sure you take your time. Buying an air cylinder should be a seamless process. In the end, if you made the right purchase you will know it.

Eli Shukron, the authority's director of excavations, says this is the first time the city's name has appeared on an artifact from this period. The clay seal, or bulla, was found in a Jerusalem dig.

Shukron said on Wednesday the seal bears the ancient Hebrew script used during the period of the first biblical Jewish Temple. He says pottery found nearby dates back to the same period.

It's raining men and cheesy music all over the "Magic Mike" soundtrack. A number of classics made the cut, and so did star Matthew McConaughey, who will be putting his shirtless stamp all over a track called "Ladies of Tampa."

Other songs on the soundtrack include a cover of the Weather Girls classic "It's Raining Men," by Countre Black, as well as the Foreigner classic "Feels Like the First Time." The soundtrack will drop on June 26, , just in time for the film, which opens June 29.

Noticeably absent from the track list is Ginuwine's "Pony," which star Channing Tatum said he dances to in the flick. "I dance to a pretty sexy hip-hop song, 'Pony,' " . "It's been one of my all-time favorite songs to grind to, so hopefully it's going to be [good]. And everyone did their own dancing. There is not a bit of substitution, everyone was game to take it off and get crazy."

"Magic Mike" follows Tatum, the title character, as he takes a newbie stripper (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing. In addition to catching those two dance around shirtless, audiences will see McConaughey, Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello playing strippers in the Steven Soderbergh-directed film. Tatum will join MTV News during MTV Sneak Peek Week on Thursday, May 31, to chat about the release. It will all go down at the 5 Towers on Universal CityWalk the week of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards.

The full track list for the "Magic Mike" soundtrack:

»Alice Russell, "Breakdown"
»Countre Black, "It's Raining Men"
»The Unknown, "Bang Bang Boom"
»Black Daniel, "Gimme What You Got"
»Cloud Control, "Just for Now"
»Ringside, "Money"
»Joe Tex, "Sassy Sexy Wiggle"
»Vegas Audio Ninjas, "Mo Cash!"

HBT: Rangers' Feliz out until All-Star break

UPDATE: According to Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said earlier this evening that Feliz has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He won?t throw for four weeks, but he could be shut down for longer.

7:36 PM: The Rangers placed Neftali Feliz on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon with right elbow inflammation. While an MRI revealed no structural damage in the elbow, it will be a while before we see him back in the big leagues.

According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said this afternoon that Feliz will be shut down for a month. He?ll resume a throwing program after that, but assuming that he?ll likely need at least a couple minor league rehab starts, that places his return somewhere around the All-Star break. And that?s assuming no setbacks.

Feliz, who is making the transition from closer to starting pitcher, has a 3.16 ERA and 37/23 K/BB ratio over 42 2/3 innings this season. Scott Feldman will fill his spot in the starting rotation for now.

Green Home Improvement Projects Worth Investing In | Furniture ...

Different home improvement projects leave us feeling good for different reasons. You can improve the living standard for your self or family, for example. When you participate in environmental projects known as green projects you?re working to improve the planet. Many of these projects serve you (by reducing energy costs) just as well as they serve the planet. Even better is the fact that you can play with power tools and countless other fun stuff while doing it. So it really can be a total win situation all around for some of us.

Consider installing double pane windows for your next project as they provide a nice return on your investment if you stay in the home for a while. These windows aren?t necessary in all locations though. But most people are safe with this investment as it works in areas that are cold, hot, or some combination thereof. Double-pane windows will serve to both insulate as well as reduce noise in the home. You will find variations in the space between the glass, and the distance can run from one inch down to a quarter inch. Argon, an inert gas, is usually used to fill this space.

There are all kinds of siding you can install on your house unless you love painting it every once in a while ? but most people do not. So, this is worth your time to learn more about, and there are very many options and choices available to you. Aluminium might be preferred as a siding by some people, whereas others might choose a vinyl material. Apart from the benefit of resisting rot, vinyl siding won?t fade and also it will not get deformed. But when it?s being installed make sure the nails used don?t go in too far, otherwise there will be an unattractive pinching look.

Even though it is considered to be a nice home improvement project, adding an additional room to your home can cost a lot of money. However that is not always possible for a variety of reasons with cost being chief among them. Well, a great alternative to a full blown extra room is the screened-in enclosure. These screened in areas can become quite cozy and you can appreciate many of the benefits that they provide. If you want to add on a room to your house, maybe you should think about some of the other alternatives first. You can invite several professional installation companies to come over and give you an estimate. Expect them to try to sell you something, but they are all competing for your business. So, you have the upper negotiating hand. Well, we hope you are duly impressed with just this little bit about villas in ubud bali. To make things even better, you just need to push the envelope a little bit by discovering more beyond this article.

Of course you are here because you have a need to know more, and of course you need some additional support in the way of leveraging the work of others. Not everybody has the initiative to learn more in any truly meaningful way. Your efforts to discover more on this subject will eventually prove to be liberating for you.

Not every home improvement project is fun since there is maintenance involved as well. We find it helpful to make an annual and monthly schedule of what needs to be inspected around the home. This makes things a lot easier to get done.

Now that you know a bit more about villas in tanah lot bali, you can easily see the important part it plays. But it really can easily go far beyond the obvious since it is tough to know all about what is possible. That is what usually can cause certain issues to come into play. So it is definitely in your best interest to implement further attempts to broaden your knowledge. Still, that should not be any kind of problem considering the vast expanse of the web. However, you need to do responsible research on anything. We have all seen sites that sure looked pretty suspect with their content, and you always need to pay attention.

Your attorney is a professional who knows about laws regarding bankruptcy, but you should still know as much as you can about the proceedings. You might feel overwhelmed by the process and want to leave your bankruptcy entirely up to your attorney, but stay involved ? your financial future is involved.

Southwest LRT backers will seek DEED money | Finance & Commerce

Metropolitan Council Chairwoman Susan Haigh (File photo: Bill Klotz)

The Metropolitan Council and business groups will continue to fight for preliminary engineering money for the Southwest light rail transit (LRT) line, even though the Minnesota Legislature denied a $25 million bonding request.

The regional planning agency intends to join the fray of government entities clamoring for a share of the $47.5 million that legislators gave the state Department of Employment and Economic Development to award to capital projects that would lead to jobs and business development.

The Met Council is not able to wait for the Legislature to reconvene because, says Chairwoman Susan Haigh, the failure to land state funds this year will jeopardize a major contribution from the Federal Transit Administration.

?The urgent need for this line requires that we begin exploring other temporary funding alternatives to keep the project on track until the 2013 Legislature has the opportunity to fund the state?s share of the project,? Haigh said in a statement. ?In the coming weeks, I?ll be talking with our local funding partners and the Dayton administration about how to keep Southwest light rail progressing and how to ensure the project remains competitive for federal dollars.?

Bruce Nustad, president of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce, said the Southwest LRT project needs a minimum of $14 million in state money this year for preliminary engineering to keep its place near the top among transit projects nationwide that the FTA has pledged to help fund.

?If we get $14 million, it will continue to demonstrate local commitment to the project, and it will continue to keep preliminary engineering moving forward,? Nustad said.

TwinWest and the Greater Minneapolis and St. Paul Area chambers of commerce, which lobbied hard for bonding money, will also continue to pursue funding from other sources, Nustad said.

?I think we know where the buckets are, but we don?t know what the availability or the appetite is? for funding the Southwest LRT, he said. ?Conceivably a failure to fully fund preliminary engineering could stall the project. Obviously, a stalling ? would not send a good message? to the FTA, he added. ?Right now the project enjoys a very favorable placement in the federal queue, and we don?t want to give that up.?

The project would still need $9 million to start the final design, said Met Council spokeswoman Laura Baenen.

The council already has $47 million dedicated to this two-year engineering phase from the Counties Transit Improvement Board and the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority, she added. The state?s proposed $125 million total contribution would be matched 9-to-1 with federal and county funds to pay up to half the cost of the line.

It?s unclear whether the LRT project would qualify for the DEED bonding money because the line is in the preliminary engineering phase. DEED officials have said they want that money to go to projects that would begin construction during this construction season, said DEED spokesman Monte Hanson.

?At this point, we haven?t even set up the criteria for how that funding will go out,? Hanson said. ?It?s just a little bit early for us.?

The Southwest LRT has stiff competition for the DEED money. The final $496 million bonding bill was two-thirds of the amount that Gov. Mark Dayton requested for bonding projects.

The rejected projects are lining up. As previously reported by Finance & Commerce, Mankato, Rochester and St. Cloud city officials emailed requests for a total of $59.6 million for civic centers to DEED Commissioner Mark Phillips shortly after the Republican-controlled Legislature passed the bonding bill. St. Paul wants $27 million for a new Saints baseball stadium in Lowertown.

The situation is frustrating to light rail proponents.

?The bottom line right now is there?s $47 million on the table to spend for preliminary engineering, but we can?t access all of it without the state committing,? said Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman, who represents St. Louis Park and the portion of Minneapolis through which the line would run. ?Even though we have enough money to do a year (to) a year-and-a-half of design and engineering work, we?re still required to have a proportionate amount from the state.?

Hennepin County officials had been planning the project for about a dozen years before the FTA committed to funding preliminary engineering in September 2011, giving the green light to the Met Council to take over.

The county intends to lobby the Legislature for more money, Dorfman said. She said it?s not unusual for local government agencies to approach the Legislature multiple times for a state contribution to such a project.

Baenen would not specify how much money the Met Council would seek from DEED.

Meanwhile, the council is negotiating with one of two companies, URS Corp. and AECOM, on the preliminary engineering contract, said Baenen, who said she was prohibited from identifying which one until the council approves the contract.

?Unfortunately, the procurement process remains active, and we are not at liberty to discuss anything until an award is made,? AECOM spokesman Paul Dickard wrote in an email. ?Even then, if we are fortunate to receive the contract, we would need to receive approval from the client to offer any comment, which is standard practice for all of our client-based activities.?

A URS spokesman also declined to comment.

The 15.5-mile Southwest LRT line would run through Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Hopkins, St. Louis Park and Minneapolis. From Minneapolis, riders could continue on the Central Corridor LRT line to St.? Paul or change trains at Target Field Station for the Hiawatha LRT or the Northstar commuter rail line.

If all goes according to schedule, construction on the $1.25 billion Southwest line would begin in 2014, and it would open in 2018.

The GI Bill And How It Helps Veterans Further Their Education ...

WWII had ended and troops were returning home to the United States, ready to jump back in to civilian life. Something needed to be done to allow the troops to be reinstated into American life without flooding the job market. The government feared a breakdown of the economy causing another depression. A solution was found in the establishment of the Servicemen???s Readjustment Act of 1944; more commonly called the GI Bill.

The GI Bill has evolved into the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Currently, veterans of the US Armed Forces have access to funding for postsecondary school through the for certificates programs, vocational schools and colleges.

The original GI Bill included provisions for education and training, guaranteed home, farm and business loans, and unemployment pay. The educational benefits of the bill are the most commonly known. Approximately one-half of the 16 million WWII and Korean War veterans used the educational benefits by the time the bill expired in 1956. The diversion of thousands of vets into college kept the influx of workers into the job market manageable.

In 1966, the GI Bill was re-instituted as the Veterans Readjustment Benefits Act, later known as the Vietnam Era GI Bill. A higher percentage of this era???s veterans used the educational benefits of this bill than any previous generation. However, with the onset of the all-volunteer military, the GI Bill ended for those entering the service after 1976.

Enactment of the Montgomery GI Bill

Education benefits remained an outstanding recruiting tool for the military and benefits were provided with the contributory Veterans Educational Assistance Program and the Montgomery GI Bill. The passage of these two programs ensured that veterans would be able to take out home loans and also provided veterans scholarships and matched educational contributions up to 8 times the amount the serviceman provided. The Montgomery GI Bill also allows benefits to be transferred to a spouse or children of the veteran.

Post September 11 GI Bill

In the summer of 2008, Congress passed the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act, which expanded educational benefits for those serving after September 10, 2001. The new bill provides tuition payment, a stipend for books and supplies, a housing allowance and other benefits for vets attending college, vocational school, trade school, or pursuing a certificate program. The benefits are tier-based on the amount of active duty time served since 9/11 and vary from state to state based on the cost of attending a public college.

Without the GI Bill many veterans would be unable to continue their education. The GI Bill continues to help veterans eliminate or lower the cost of education and provides for enough living expenses to make an additional income unnecessary for most veterans.http://www.populararticles.com/

Here's how you get a piece of Facebook

Danny Moloshok / AP

Facebook's logo is seen at a movie theater in Los Angeles. The social network's stock is expected to start trading on the Nasdaq this Friday.

By Roland Jones

Excitement is mounting for Facebook?s expected debut on financial markets Friday. So if you?re an individual investor, can you get a piece of the action, and should you?

The first thing to remember about IPOs is that they are not normally geared toward individual investors. Underwriting banks typically allocate IPO shares to their best clients, which include hedge funds, wealthy individuals and large institutional investors. These investors will get the right to buy a certain number of shares at the offering price, which is expected to be announced Thursday afternoon. Facebook estimates the offering price will be in the range of $28 to $35 a share.

Some smaller retail investors may get a few shares allocated, especially if they have a good relationship with a broker for one of the dozens of underwriting firms handling the transaction.

If you have not already been in touch with your broker, however, it is too late to even try get in at the offering price. The deadline to express interest was Tuesday afternoon at brokerages we checked with, and the deal reportedly is oversubscribed.

Your only option is to buy shares after they begin trading on the Nasdaq stock market, when the price will be set by the law of supply and demand.

?This is not a strategy for the faint of heart,??said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors in Albany, N.Y.?Intense?interest in Facebook?s offering is likely to drive the price up sharply as soon as trading begins, meaning the first public trade could be well above the offering price.

In an example of the type of pressure investors could face, LinkedIn, another social media company, went public almost exactly a year ago at $45 a share and closed at $94 on a volatile first day of trading that saw its shares top $122 at one point.

That means investors lucky enough to get in at the offering price were able to book an immediate paper profit of more than 100 percent or?"flip" shares and cash in. Other investors paid as much as $122 a share for LinkedIn that day and were left with paper losses. (LinkedIn shares currently trade for about $113.)?

Facebook could easily see a similar first-day trajectory, but it is impossible to know. Online investors who place a general order for Facebook stock will get shares at whatever price happens to be prevailing at the moment.

?Is it a sound investment for a sensible portfolio? No," said Johnson. "Is it a worthwhile speculative investment? Sure, but you have to be fully prepared for something that could be a very emotional event. And I have the sense that [the IPO price] could be very overvalued.?

One good piece of news about Facebook?s IPO is there are plenty of shares up for grabs.

In a sign of intense investor interest, Facebook said early investors in the company will be selling more of their shares in the IPO, bringing the total number of shares available to as many as 484.4 million, up from a previous maximum of 337.4 million.

The news came a day after Facebook raised the expected price range for the stock to a range of $34 to $38 per share, up from its previous range of $28 to $35.

Still, despite the increased number of shares on offer, the hype and interest surrounding Facebook?s IPO are precisely why investors should be cautious about investing in the company, said Professor Anant Sundaram of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

?My concern is the market is pricing [Facebook] to perfection ? and the kind of fundamentals that are premised in that valuation, growth and revenues and cash flows, are simply astronomical,? he told CNBC Wednesday. ?Now it?s possible they could achieve that, but I think the probability is low.?

Sundaram also says the fact that founder Mark Zuckerberg will control more than 50 percent of the company?s voting rights after it goes public is ?very, very troubling.?

While a handful of new technology companies, such as Google, have thrived under the tight control of their founders, the stock ownership structure at Facebook limits the ability of shareholders to take action if things go wrong.?He?said evidence shows tightly controlled companies are more likely to wasteful acquisitions, overpay employees and spend unnecessarily on capital expenditures.

Other technology companies, such as Microsoft and Apple, have fared well without that sort of governance structure, Sundaram said.?

?Basically, as investors we are being asked to liquefy and validate a lot of insider wealth, and being told to sit and zip your lips in the peanut gallery,? he said.

While Facebook is expected to get a big opening-day ?pop,? Kathleen Shelton Smith, co-founder and chairman of IPO research company Renaissance Capital says it?s more important to track what Facebook?s stock price will be a week or a month after its initial trading day.

?For an IPO to work it has to trade higher over time after the initial trading day, and not all of them do,? said Smith. ?So the challenge for the underwriters is to price the IPO where it can move higher over time.?

CNBC's Kayla Tausche reports Facebook's IPO is expected to be priced in the $34 to $38 range after the market closes today.

?The question is, over time will the company deliver the kind of performance that justifies its price? Every investor studying this company wants to work that out.?

For individual investors, it is worth remembering that Facebook shares will be available on Nasdaq for the foreseeable future. Would-be investors can wait a day or two and buy shares when the price is less volatile.

For investors interested in IPOs, but unable to purchase them directly, Smith suggests investing in a mutual fund that track the IPO market, such as the Direxion Long/Short Global IPO Fund (ticker:?DXIIX) or the Renaissance Global IPO Plus Aftermarket Fund (ticker:?IPOSX).

Investing in these funds might even be a smarter play than buying Facebook shares directly. Sundaram said there are many reasons to expect Facebook shares to fall after their opening day.

He pointed to similar technology companies such as?Zynga, which have seen their share prices fall after the expiration of "lockups" that prevent company insiders and major investors from selling for at least 90 days after a stock is first publicly traded.

If Facebook shares manage to hold their value??that would be a remarkable achievement in my book,? he said.

Ottawa, Canada ? Physique, the intelligent workout planning and tracking app, is now available on the App Store. Physique helps gym-goers plan and track their weight lifting workout routines with ease so they can improve their fitness, gain strength, build muscle, and slim down. Physique was developed with exercise science principles in mind and pioneers a number of smart features that are intended to streamline users? workouts from start to finish, helping them quickly enter their results and make consistent progress:

* Automatic Weight Progression ? Lifting progressively heavier weights is key to getting results while weight training. Physique has weight progression built right in. By analyzing previous workout results, it determines when to increase users? target weights and by how much. This powerful feature encourages continuous improvement.

* Warm-up Sets ? Warm-up sets help prevent injuries and prepare weight lifters for the heavier sets that follow. With this feature, Physique calculates the best warm-up weights to use and adds them to the user?s workout.

* Integrated Barbell Calculator ? Previously, gym-goers had to calculate which plates to use during barbell exercises. Physique saves users time by displaying an easy-to-understand visual breakdown of the plates used for any given weight.

* Rest Timers ? Keeping workouts consistent from week-to-week is important for measuring overall progress. Physique?s Rest Timer feature automatically adds a timer before each set and advances when finished.

* Intelligent Keyboard ? Users spend less time entering their workouts while using a custom keyboard designed for quickly entering weights and reps.

* Automatically tracks personal records and calculates estimated one rep maxes
* Comes with 10 professionally designed workout routines
* Share completed workouts to Facebook Timeline and Twitter

Physique offers a streamlined, intuitive user experience for both planning and tracking workout routines. Users set up their routine before going to the gym and use Physique to enter their weights and reps throughout their workout. It?s fast to enter weights due to the weight progression and intelligent keyboard, taking as little as two taps per set.
