On-the-record, roundtable discussion on the state of US science, technology and innovation with experts from leading research universities moderated by Dr. C.D. (Dan) Mote, Jr.
- What is the role of the research university today center for discovery, economic growth engine, innovation hub, international collaborator, training ground for future leaders?
- Are research universities prepared for the challenges that lie ahead?
- Is America keeping up or falling behind in the global innovation race?
- People are our greatest asset how do we keep that pipeline flowing?
- What is the impact of the fiscal crisis on America's research enterprise?
Participants
Dr. C.D. (Dan) Mote, Jr., Former President, University of Maryland (moderator) Dr. Mote served as President of the University of Maryland and is currently Regents Professor in its A. James Clark School of Engineering. During his presidency, he led the university to national eminence and was deeply involved in development of the state's high-tech economy and the national discourse on U.S. global leadership in science, technology and innovation. Dr. Mote co-authored the 2005 and 2010 National Academies reports Rising Above the Gathering Storm.
Mark A. Barteau, Senior Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Initiatives, University of Delaware a chemical engineer whose research focuses on designing new materials based on the development of new catalytic technology.
Clyde Briant, Vice President for Research, Brown University a former GE R&D engineer and an expert on moving university innovation to the marketplace.
Robert V. Duncan, Vice Chancellor for Research, University of Missouri a distinguished researcher and scholar who has published extensively on the topic of experimental low-temperature physics.
Steven J. Fluharty, Vice Provost for Research, University of Pennsylvania an NIH-funded researcher and a professor of pharmacology, psychology and neuroscience.
Stephen R. Forrest, Vice President for Research, University of Michigan a physicist, engineer and entrepreneur with more than 220 patents to his name.
Benjamin S. Hsiao, Vice President for Research and Chief Research Officer, Stony Brook University a chemical engineer whose research on nanofiber technology has led to a new class of membranes for water purification and biomedical applications; he previously worked in R&D at E.I. DuPont Company.
A.J. Stewart Smith, Dean for Research, Princeton University a leading researcher in high-energy particle physics and a member of the boards of directors of two DOE labs.
