Eight boats were attacked by suspected pirates on Lake Victoria even as it emerged Kenyan and Ugandan police on Migingo Island have not been working together.
Migingo Beach Management Unit Secretary, Mr Charles Otieno told The Standard that fishermen lost fish worth thousands of shillings during the Monday night attack in Kiwa Island.
He said two weeks ago, four boats belonging to Kenyan fishermen were also attacked and the occupants were robbed of their catch, petrol and other personal items.
?We are concerned at the increase of pirate activities on the lake and we do not understand what Kenyan security officers were supposed to do on the island,? he said.
Nyatike OCPD Samwel Anampiu confirmed that he had received complaints from the fishermen and urged them to report the matter to officers on Migingo to launch investigations.
He revealed that joint security patrols had failed due to reluctance by Ugandan officers to work with their Kenyan counterparts.
Joint patrols
?We are working towards having our own boat to begin patrols of the lake. We have not been able to conduct a joint one but we are working on it administratively,? he said.
Meanwhile, a 35-year-old fisherman drowned while his colleague escaped death narrowly after their fishing boat was attacked by a hippopotamus.
Michael Ouma Okoth drowned and his body is yet to be recovered while Peter Odundo managed to swim to safety after their boat capsized at Uharia beach in Bondo District.
The survivor said the animal attacked them a few metres away from the shore as they were about to dock.
Fishermen launched a search for the body as leaders urged Kenya Wildlife Service to control the hippos, which have become a menace.
