Sales of single-family homes and median sale prices in Maine dropped in April, according to statistics released this week by Maine Real Estate Information System Inc.
Realtors in Maine sold 236 fewer homes ? a 23.7 percent decrease ? last month compared with one year ago. The median sales price of those homes dropped 2.84 percent to $160,750.
The trend in Maine was seen throughout New England with homes sales dropping 32 percent in the region and the regional median sales price dropping 7.3 percent to $225,400.
In the three-month period ending April 30, home sales declined 18 percent from the previous year with the biggest drops ? more than 30 percent ? coming in Androscoggin, Kennebec and Lincoln counties. In Penobscot County, home sales declined 26 percent. Franklin and Washington counties were the only Maine counties to see increases in home sales during the three-month period, but those numbers were based on relatively small sample sizes.
Home sales throughout the nation also dropped in April by 12.6 percent from April 2010. The median sales price nationwide decreased 5.4 percent from last year to $163,200.
