TORONTO ? From the "stranger than we can imagine" bureau: Telefilm Canada has sidestepped the Canadian blockbuster Resident Evil: Afterlife to give its Golden Box Office Award for the country?s top 2010 box office earner to Vincenzo Natali?s creature feature Splice.
The Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley-starrer, a Canadian-French co-production, secured $2.1 million in Canadian box office last year, and $26.9 million worldwide.
Telefilm Canada, the federal government?s film financier, in honoring Splice, overlooked Resident Evil: Afterlife, which grossed $7 million at the Canadian box office last year.
?Without their support this strange but beautiful creature could never have come to life,? Splice director and co-writer Natali said Thursday of Telefilm Canada?s investment in his film after receiving a check for $40,000 that accompanies the Golden Box Office Award.
Resident Evil: Afterlife, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and like Splice a Canadian-French co-production, went on to secure around $300 million in worldwide ticket receipts in 2010.
Despite having no Telefilm Canada investment, Resident Evil: Afterlife was honored by the Genies, Canada?s film awards, with its Golden Reel Award, given annually to the Canadian film that secures the highest domestic box office.
