Dutch government gives green light to online gambling | Letitflow.com

The Dutch government revealed recently they will be taking action to liberalise online gambling legislation, lifting restrictions that hundreds of thousands of Dutch ignore every year.

Officials confirmed plans to introduce new measures to grant Dutch citizens access to recognised overseas-based online casinos.

The lifting of the online gambling restrictions in the Netherlands could be brought into force as early as 2015.

The move comes as other EU nations, including Austria, Italy and France, have recently disbanded their existing state-run monopolies.

Although gambling is legal in the Netherlands, the market is currently dominated by state-run monopoly casino operator Holland Casino, which is responsible for the management of all 14 land-based casino venues in the Netherlands.

The monopoly has resulted in years of legal battles between the Dutch government and online casino firms. Several of these firms accused the government of failing to comply with EU free trade laws, while others have also pointed out the government?s consistent attempts to discourage citizens from accessing online casinos based outside the region.

The legal battle came to a head in 2008 after the Dutch banks were instructed to decline transactions from online casino services.

?It is a big shift (in policy), but this is a new government with a more liberal approach,? said Jaap Oosterveer, a spokesman for the Dutch ministry of public safety and justice.

Dutch gamers are now hoping the move will pave the way for greater gaming freedom in their country and will facilitate the introduction of online bingo, sports betting and poker services.

With the liberalisation of Internet gambling in the Netherlands, online gambling operators will be expected to apply for approved licenses which will be auctioned online.

The Dutch government expects the auctioning of Internet gambling and lottery licenses to generate at least 10 million euros per year for its coffers starting from 2012.
