Soriano's homer helps Cubs beat Mariners in 11th

SEATTLE (AP) ? Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

Nate Schierholtz opened the 11th with a drag bunt off Oliver Perez (2-2). Soriano then connected on a 1-2 pitch over the center-field wall, his ninth.

That ended a 14-game scoreless streak for Perez.

The Mariners had tied the game with two outs in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Henry Blanco earned a one-out walk off Kevin Gregg to start the rally. Michael Saunders ran for him. Nick Franklin moved Saunders to second with a right-side groundout.

Endy Chavez, on a 0-for-19 slide entering his at-bat, sliced a single into shallow center, scoring Saunders with the tying run.

Former CFL fixture Jack Gotta dies

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) ? Jack "Jocko" Gotta, the former Canadian Football League player, coach and general manager who coached teams to Grey Cup and World Football League titles, died Saturday.

He was 83.

The Calgary Stampeders said Gotta died at Bethany Care Centre in Calgary.

The former Oregon State player began his nine-year CFL career as a wide receiver and defensive back in 1956 with Calgary and also played for Saskatchewan and Montreal.

He became Ottawa's head coach in 1970 and led the Rough Riders to the Grey Cup title in 1973. In 1974, he coached the Birmingham Americans to the first and only World Football League title.

Gotta returned to the CFL to coach Calgary and Saskatchewan. He was the CFL's coach of the year in 1972 and 1973 with Ottawa and 1978 with Calgary.

AMA MOTOCROSS

Dungey races to 3rd Motocross win of season

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (AP) ? Ryan Dungey raced to his third 450 Class victory of the AMA Lucas Oil Motocross season Saturday in Moto-X 338, winning the first moto and finishing second behind Ryan Villopoto in the second.

Dungey, the Red Bull KTM rider from Belle Plaine, Minn., also won June 1 in Blountville, Tenn., and last week in Mechanicsville, Md. He won the season title last year.

Villopoto was fourth in the first moto and second overall. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider from Poulsbo, Wash., also has three victories in the first six rounds. He leads the standings, 12 points ahead of Dungey.

Eli Tomac won the 250 Class event, winning the first moto and finishing second in the second for GEICO Honda. Tomac, from Cortez, Colo., also won this season in Lakewood, Colo.

Points leader Ken Roczen, the Red Bull KTM rider from German, was second overall. He was third in the first moto and won the second.

Roczen has a seven-point lead over Tomac.

Texas Tales: {Weekend Recap} New House Progress & Family Fun!

This weekend was a really good one?and I'm glad for that, because things are about to get a whole lot of crazy up in here. Moving day is just three more days away!!! We'll be transporting the babies to our new "forever home" on Thursday, July 4, as well as most or all of our apartment belongings. Movers will bring the rest of our stuff from our two giant storage units the following week. It's everything I can do not to throw all the stuff in the pantry into a box, grab the babies and their mountain of supplies and haul it on over to our new place. Course, that's all easier said then done and since I need a small army to make it happen, I'm back to watching the clock run down the hours. Tick, tock...

Saturday morning, I spent a few hours out by myself getting a pedicure and running errands and I loved every minute. I actually really enjoy going to the grocery store and I really, really enjoy going to the grocery store by myself when I don't have strict time restraints that only allow 10 minutes to find and purchase a week's worth of food!

I finally had time to do a little meal planning and so when I got back home, I grilled a steak (on my stove-top grill pan on an electric stove...be impressed!) and made some mac & cheese and green beans for our lunch. The babies munched on the exact same thing, plus a few extra snacks, and really dug into the mac & cheese. The husband and I sat at the table and ate our lunch with them, something we've been doing more and more of lately. Family meal time will definitely be a big staple in our house?our new house!

I also whipped up five freezer meals that will make dinners a cinch after we get moved. The last thing I'll have the energy for is to think about and assemble dinner. I chose meals that I felt the babies would be able to eat as well, and that I could make easy side dishes to go with them like rice, steamed broccoli, salad and so on. I find a lot of my crock pot recipes and freezer meal ideas from the Six Sisters website.?

Sunday we lounged around all morning and implemented our new napping schedule. Instead of two naps at 10am and 2pm, the crew is only going down for one nap right after lunch (around noon). They've been fighting naps pretty hard and don't sleep very long, so I figured this may be the answer to our problems. We're still in the "test phase" so we'll see how it goes over the next few days!

After nap time and dosing everyone with Advil?two of the kiddos have had high fevers and two low-grade fevers as a result of their 12 month vaccines last week?we headed to Home Depot with the quads for the first time. They loved looking around at everything and I think they enjoyed sitting in their quad stroller versus their car seats that attach to the two twin stroller frames. We didn't attract a ridiculous amount of attention, a couple people tried to stop and talk but we just kept moving.

We loaded the babies through the back of the suburban since their car seats were still in place inside. Which meant, ladies and gents, that yours truly had to climb into the back seat like a spider monkey then turn and wrangle the babies over the seat as well and into their car seats. My level of flexibility is mildly impressive sometimes, even to me!!

While we'd been shopping inside, I'd fed the babies animal crackers and graham cookies, then did squeeze pouches of applesauce and a Plum Organics meal for their snack once we got back in the car. Worked out perfectly! They lulled off to sleep on our drive over to the new house so we could check on the progress and drop off a couple things. I was so happy to see the babies bedrooms painted and dry wall going up in the all the holes!

After we got back to the apartment, I made chicken fajitas for dinner, along with refried beans, Spanish rice and guacamole. The babies got their own dinner tray and the rice was a big hit! It also made a biiiiig mess. ;) Again, we sat at the table and ate our dinner as we fed the babies. Thankfully, they're getting better about eating fruits and have been wolfing down strawberries and blueberries.



To our complete happiness, once we put the kiddos down for bed not a single one made a peep and they all slept soundly through the night! The husband and I got to leisurely get ready for bed, watch a couple shows and still fell asleep by 10pm. A perfect weekend in my book, made only better by moving into our awesome new digs in just a few days time. Can't wait to share about our first weekend at the house!

I?ve discovered that I might have a tendency to ?Gladwellian? prose, as practised by Malcolm Gladwell, a Canadian-British journalist who wrote ?The Tipping Point?.? This is the reduction of complicated issues into simple terms.

I came across the term while reading a critique of the ?plain and clear language? of George Orwell in the New Statesman, a magazine that Orwell had once written for.? The author Ed Smith suggests that plain speaking is the current rhetorical style in Britain, and often used to hide difficult truths.

Perhaps. I understand what he means when he describes how people often frame their ?plain speaking? thoughts with comments that are, on reflection, misleading.? So the opening of: ?I?ll be honest with you?, can mean the exact opposite.

This week is the 110^th anniversary of Orwell?s birth.? Orwell was one of the 20^th century?s great writers.? Animal Farm, his fable about communism, and 1984, his warning about the future, were among the most widely read books in the world.

His opposition to totalitarianism was profound.? It came from his experiences of fighting in the Spanish Civil War, as he recounted in Homage to Catalonia.? He later wrote that ?every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism, as I understand it? (from Why I write, an article first published in 1946).

?

Orwell wasn?t the first to warn of the dangers of a totalitarian future.? He acknowledged that 1984 was modelled on We, a novel by the Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin, first published in 1924 in an English translation.? Orwell first read the novel in 1946.

Orwell was a strong believer in the clarity of writing.? As he set out in his essay Politics and the English Language (the one that Mr Smith was questioning), he worried that writing on political subjects was often vague or insincere, because writers wanted to avoid or hide difficult truths.? And the use of vague and misleading language could limit the capacity for critical thought.

Orwell was committed to clarity because he valued honesty above everything else.? He was sometimes an awkward friend, who criticised sloppy and convoluted writing, regardless of the author.? He wrote in the 1930s and 40s, when the political divisions and choices were probably clearer than they are today.

While Mr Smith may have a point about the use of plain language to divert, I?m not sure it negates the value of clear writing.? Clear, understandable prose ensures you communicate a message effectively, as well as being a courtesy to readers.

Orwell?s six rules were:

Never use a metaphor, simile or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.

Never use a long word where a short one will do.

If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

Never use the passive where you can use the active.

Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.

Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

I try to follow them.? Orwell himself wasn?t the best at following his own advice.? The essay Politics and the English Language has lots of passive constructions.

Shakespeare wrote that brevity is the soul of wit. ?Long sentences, with unnecessary adjectives, adverbs, subordinate verbs and clauses, can be unclear and confusing.? A good tip for all that Orwell might have endorsed:? try to keep sentences to less than 20 words.

Final compromise issued on birth-control mandate - The Seattle Times

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration issued its final compromise Friday for religiously affiliated charities, hospitals and other nonprofits that object to covering birth control in their employee health plans.

The Health and Human Services Department said the final plan simplifies how insurers provide the coverage separately from faith-based groups and gives religious nonprofits more time to comply. However, the changes are unlikely to resolve objections from faith groups that the requirement violates their religious freedom.

More than 60 lawsuits have been filed challenging the rule. The cases are expected to reach the Supreme Court.

The birth-control rule was first introduced in February 2012 as part of President Obama?s health-care law. The original plan exempted churches and other houses of worship, but required faith-affiliated charities, universities and other nonprofits to provide the coverage for their employees.

The regulation became an election-year issue as Roman Catholic bishops, evangelicals and some religious leaders lobbied for a broader exemption. The Obama administration offered a series of accommodations, leading to the final rules released Friday.

Under the compromise, administration officials said they simplified the definition of religious organizations that are fully exempt from the requirement. The change means a church that also ran a soup kitchen would not have to comply.

Other religious nonprofits must notify their insurance company that they object to birth-control coverage. The insurer or administrator of the plan will then notify affected employees separately that coverage will be provided at no cost. The insurers would be reimbursed by a credit against fees owed the government.

Michael Hash, director of the health-reform office of the Health and Human Services Department, said the final regulation spells out in more detail the buffer between religious charities and contraceptive coverage. Faith-based groups were given another reprieve ? until Jan. 1 ? to comply.

Judy Waxman, of the National Women?s Law Center, an advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., said her organization could accept the plan. ?It?s fair,? she said.

However, Eric Rassbach, an attorney with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a law firm challenging the contraception-coverage rule, said: ?It doesn?t really change the overall way they?re trying to do this.? The Becket Fund represents many of the organizations challenging the regulation in federal court.

Lawsuits against the requirement are split almost evenly between nonprofit plaintiffs ? including several Roman Catholic dioceses ? and for-profit businesses, which say the rules go against their religious beliefs. For-profit businesses are not included in the accommodation released Friday.

Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby Stores is the largest and best-known of the businesses that have sued. On Thursday, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver allowed the lawsuit to move forward on religious grounds. The judges said the portion of the law that requires Hobby Lobby to offer certain kinds of birth control to employees is particularly onerous and sent the case back to a court in Oklahoma.

On Friday, the lower court granted Hobby Lobby a temporary injunction against full enforcement of the law. Businesses that fail to comply potentially face fines based on the number of workers they employ and other factors. The amount for Hobby Lobby could reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Neither the Catholic Health Association, a trade group for hospitals, nor the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had an immediate reaction Friday, saying the regulations were being studied.

If Nokia had a dollar for every time some pundit, analyst or tech blogger said it should switch from Windows Phone to Android, the company?s recovery would be much further along than it is right now. That didn?t stop?Bernstein Research analyst Pierre Ferragu from recommending yet again in a recent note to clients that Nokia bail on Microsoft?s mobile platform and embrace the dominant Android operating system.

Nokia should ?take the pill before one cannot afford to do so anymore? and switch to Android before it?s too late, Ferregu wrote in a research note picked up by Barron?s. Continuing to rely on Windows Phone and Nokia?s ?Asha? feature phone platform while cash dwindles is an?exercise?in futility, according to the analyst.

?Nokia should consider it?s [sic] near term future,? Ferregu wrote.??The company is facing two structural challenges: its exposure to the disappearing feature phone market and the lack of traction of Windows phones. Both could cost Nokia a lot of cash in the near term, in restructuring, marketing / distribution support, and operational losses, which means it could be too late to address the problem in a ?couple of years. From that perspective, a decision concerning a new platform strategy appears urgent. Better to take the pill before one cannot afford to do so anymore. We wouldn?t be surprised to see Nokia adopting Android as its new low-end platform by year end.?
