A newsroom tradition when a colleague leaves?is to print a fake front page with war stories and photographs of the person?s time at the publication. This is a?blog version of that custom.?
It?s a sad day on the Sun Sentinel breaking news desk because our esteemed colleague Danielle Alvarez is leaving to join?a Coral Gables public relations firm.
For the fire and police public information officers reading this post, Danielle is the nice,?soft spoken one who would call from the Sun Sentinel, asking for probable cause affidavits?and other facts.
Danielle started at the Sun Sentinel Dec. 6, 2010, when our editors saw her potential and hired her before she?d even finished her graduate studies at the University of Miami, coursework she completed a few weeks later.?
Her beat?included the always fascinating ?bond court,? where new arrestees first appear before a judge.? There, the TV camera guys called her ?Kid.??
But she blossomed from a cub reporter to a pro in a very short time, and her 14 months as a journalist have been action-packed.
?The day after Bin Laden was killed was a fun day at work,? Danielle said about her pre-dawn assignment to?visit a?mosque to gather?religious leaders? reactions?to the?death of the terrorist.?
After a triple homicide,?a?grieving grandmother assaulted her outside a courtroom. She has reported on?many of the other tragic events that comprise breaking news, including the shooting death?of Miramar mother Julia Bennett.?
The?woman?s boyfriend told police?their?baby pulled the trigger, a story that landed Danielle on Nancy Grace?s show.
One of the?last of her hundreds of?stories?was about?Broward Judge John ?Jay? Hurley?s controversial decision to order a?man?charged with domestic violence?battery to?make?birthday?amends to his wife and take her to Red Lobster as well as marriage counseling.?
The story made news around the world and the judge?s ruling drew criticism from?advocates for domestic violence victims.? It also?brought attention to how such cases are?handled by the courts.
Assistant City Editor Doug Phillips, Assistant News Editor Joy?Oglesby and reporters?Ihosvani ?Geo? Rodriguez and Juan Ortega and I?wish Danielle all the success her talent will bring.? Her replacement will have big Tory Burch flats to fill.
