Having Sons Can Shorten a Woman's Life Expectancy

Each boy raises the risk of death by 7 percent. They may be energetically more demanding to breast-feed

From Nature magazine.

Women who bear sons can have slightly shorter lives than those who bear daughters, researchers have found. Their study showed that a woman?s risk of death increased by 7% per year for each son born ? a small but statistically robust effect, at least for the individuals the team looked at ? Finnish villagers in pre-Industrial Scandinavia.

?Previous investigations into the effect of the gender of a baby on its mother?s lifespan have been mixed, so our new analysis really is just another brick in the wall,? says Samuli Helle of the University of Turku in Finland, the study's lead author. ?I?m not surprised the results have been mixed, because the previous studies have involved different societies, cultural practices and so on.?

A litany of factors could influence a woman?s lifespan, such as affluence and nutrition, as well as the number of children she has. The impact of having a boy compared with a girl is likely to be most pronounced in settings where resources such as food and health care are poor.

Helle and his co-author, Virpi Lummaafound, investigated parish records for individuals in eight parishes who lived during the seventeenth to mid-twentieth centuries. They found that if a woman in these communities was 37 years old at the time of having her last child, her life expectancy would vary depending on the sex of her children. She would live for another 33.1 years if she had no sons, another 32.7 years if she had three and another 32.4 years if she had six.

The study, which appears in Biology Letters, builds on previous research published by the same team in the journal Science more than ten years ago, which found that for every son she had, a woman's life would be shortened by an average of 34 weeks. By contrast, daughters actually lengthened their mother's lifespan very slightly (though not statistically significantly). In both studies, the life-shortening effects were experienced only by mothers, not fathers.

Biological factors
But the reason behind this small difference is the big puzzle. ?The relative importance of biological versus cultural factors remains an open question,? says Helle, who speculates that it could be that girls are more likely to help their parents in household duties. ?We need more data, such as how many sons versus daughters helped in everyday tasks, what age they actually started to work outside the home and so on.?

Erik Lindqvist of the Research Institute of Industrial Economics in Stockholm, who has looked at lifespan and births in Sweden, is not convinced. ?We have never been able to replicate their results," he says.

But Grazyna Jasienska, who studies longevity and reproductive health at Jagiellonian University Medical College in Cracow, Poland, believes that the effects of sons on a woman's lifespan are certainly real ? and are probably due to biological factors, such as breastfeeding.

Other studies have found that boys can take more of a toll on their mother biologically because they tend to be slightly heavier at birth than girls. And a few studies have found that women expend more energy in producing breast milk for boys ? although the results of such studies have been mixed.

?I think the costs of having boys over girls are more social than biological," she says. "But we still ultimately don?t know."

Ex-Canada ambassador slighted by Affleck's "Argo"

TORONTO (AP) ? The Canadian former ambassador to Iran who protected Americans at great personal risk during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis says it will reflect poorly on Ben Affleck if he doesn't say a few words about Canada's role if the director's film "Argo" wins the Oscar for best picture Sunday.

But Ken Taylor ? who said he feels slighted by the movie because it makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six U.S. citizens caught in the crisis ? is not expecting it.

"I would hope he would. If he doesn't than it's a further reflection," Taylor said. "But given the events of the last while I'm not necessarily anticipating anything."

Taylor kept the Americans hidden at the embassy in Tehran and facilitated their escape by getting fake passports and plane tickets for them. He became a hero in Canada and the United States after. The role he played in helping the Americans to freedom was minimized in the film.

"In general it makes it seem like the Canadians were just along for the ride. The Canadians were brave. Period," Taylor said.

Affleck's thriller is widely expected to win the best-picture trophy. Two other high-profile best-picture nominees this year, Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" and Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," have also been criticized for their portrayal of some factual issues.

Affleck said in a statement Friday night he thought his issue with Taylor had been resolved.

"I admire Ken very much for his role in rescuing the six houseguests. I consider him a hero.?In light of my many conversations as well as a change to an end card that Ken requested I am surprised that Ken continues to take issue with the film," he said in a statement. "I spoke to him recently when he asked me to narrate a documentary he is prominently featured in and yet he didn't mention any lingering concerns.?I agreed to do it and I look forward to seeing Ken at the recording."

Taylor noted that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter appeared on CNN on Thursday night and said "90 percent of the contributions to the ideas and the consummation of the plan was Canadian," but the film "gives almost full credit to the American CIA."

Carter also called "Argo" a complete distortion of what happened when he accepted an honorary degree from Queen's University in Canada in November.

"I saw the movie Argo recently and I was taken aback by its distortion of what happened because almost everything that was heroic, or courageous or innovative was done by Canada and not the United States," Carter said.

Taylor said there would be no movie without the Canadians.

"We took the six in without being asked so it starts there," Taylor said. "And the fact that we got them out with some help from the CIA then that's where the story loses itself. I think Jimmy Carter has it about right, it was 90 percent Canada, 10 percent the CIA."

He said CIA agent Tony Mendez, played by Affleck in the film, was only in Iran for a day and a half.

The movie also makes no mention of John Sheardown, a deputy at the Canadian embassy who sheltered some of the Americans. Taylor said it was Sheardown who took the first call and agreed right away to take the Americans in. Sheardown recently died and his wife, Zena, called the movie disappointing.

Friends of Taylor were outraged last September when "Argo" debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. The original postscript of the movie said that Taylor received 112 citations and awards for his work in freeing the hostages and suggested Taylor didn't deserve them because the movie ends with the CIA deciding to let Canada have the credit for helping the Americans escape

Taylor called the postscript lines "disgraceful and insulting" and said it would have caused outrage in Canada if the lines were not changed. Affleck flew Taylor to Los Angeles after the Toronto debut and allowed him to insert a postscript that gave Canada some credit.

Taylor called it a good movie and said he's not rooting against it, but said it is far from accurate.

"He's a good director. It's got momentum. There's nothing much right from Day 1 I could do about the movie. I changed a line at the end because the caption at the end was disgraceful. It's like Tiananmen Square, you are sitting in front of a big tank," he said.

GOP wary on immigration

By Michael O'Brien, Political Reporter, NBC News

?

A recurring fear has colored Republicans? attitude toward the current immigration reform debate in Congress: President Barack Obama has no actual interest in reaching a deal, and is instead pursuing the issue to exacerbate the GOP?s problems with Hispanic voters.

Yet all of the evidence so far ? whether in his speeches and or his relations with Congress ? suggests he and his administration clearly want a deal that he could sign into law.

Politics, of course, play an undeniable role in the renewed effort to overhaul the nation?s immigration laws, especially given that Obama won more than 70 percent of the Latino vote in the 2012 election. Consequently, Republicans who had previously resisted any legislation that offered a pathway to citizenship for the nation?s some 11 million undocumented immigrants have now reversed course.

Isaac Brekken / AP

In this Jan. 29, 2013, file photo, President Barack Obama speaks about immigration reform Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas.

?The Republican Party is losing the support of our Hispanic citizens and we realize that there are many issues on which we think we are in agreement with our Hispanic citizens but this is a preeminent issue with those citizens,? Arizona Sen. John McCain, a Republican member of the bipartisan Senate group working toward an immigration accord, said bluntly upon the introduction of that proposal?s framework.

But Republicans have warily engaged the new debate over immigration with active fears that the president?s true intentions on immigration are half-hearted, at best.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who?s established himself as an outspoken conservative after just a couple of months on the job, was only the latest Republican to give voice to that fear.

?I don?t believe President Obama wants an immigration bill to pass, instead I think he wants a political issue,? he said in a speech on Wednesday, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle. ?His objective is to push so much on the table that he forces Republicans walk away from the table because then he wants to use that issue in 2014 and 2016 as a divisive wedge issue.?

It?s a fear that many of Cruz?s fellow elected Republicans appear to share.

?The question that many of us are asking, Republicans and Democrats, is he looking to play politics or does he want to solve the problem?? Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the former GOP vice presidential nominee, asked during his Jan. 27 appearance on NBC's ?Meet the Press? preceding Obama?s major policy speech on immigration.

Republicans carefully watched that speech with concerns that Obama would eventually demagogue immigration. The president generally did the opposite; he used the speech to carefully embrace the bipartisan Senate talks, while warning that the administration would have its own backup plan at the ready for congressional consideration should the Senate talks fail. He further embraced a bipartisan speech in prime time, during his State of the Union address.

?As we speak, bipartisan groups in both chambers are working diligently to draft a bill, and I applaud their efforts,? Obama said. ?So let?s get this done. Send me a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the next few months, and I will sign it right away.?

But Republicans? concerns that Obama will jilt the GOP on immigration very much inform the work toward a comprehensive reform law, and help explain part of the reason why the politics of the issue are so fraught.

When a draft of the White House?s immigration reform proposal leaked over the weekend, Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican who is helping negotiate the Senate plan, pronounced it dead on arrival in Congress.

?It?s a mistake for the White House to draft immigration legislation without seeking input from Republican members of Congress,? Rubio said in a statement.

AOL Co-Founder Steve Case talks about the economy explains why he thinks comprehensive immigration reform may be the solution to attracting and keeping the brightest minds from around the world in America.

Rubio?s scorching statement was also intended to maintain credibility with conservatives, whose support ? or, at least, tolerance ? of an immigration overhaul the Cuban-American senator?s worked to win.

(And, for his part, Obama said that the leak was but a hiccup. ?It certainly did not jeopardize the entire process,? he told an Univision affiliate in Texas. ?The negotiations are still moving forward.?)

But as Republicans tread carefully toward an immigration agreement, they might also keep in mind the political skin Obama has put at stake with this issue.

For as ballyhooed as Obama?s 44-point advantage over Republican nominee Mitt Romney among Hispanic or Latino voters has been, the president had to quell frustration among Latino voters about his failure to pursue immigration in his first term. He faced some of his toughest questioning of the campaign on that very issue during a town hall last September with Univision?s Jorge Ramos, who pointedly accused Obama of breaking his promise to bring up an immigration reform bill during his first year in office. Latino activists have repeatedly criticized Obama for overseeing a record pace of deportations during his first term.

What?s more, Obama basically premised his plea for Latinos? votes on the premise that, if they helped re-elect him, immigration reform would finally be achievable.

?What I?m absolutely certain of is if the Latino community and the American community that cares about this issue turns out to vote, they can send a message that this is not something to use as a political football, that people?s lives are at stake, that this is a problem that we can solve and historically has had bipartisan support,? Obama said in the same Univision forum.

That?s to say: if immigration reform fails during Obama?s second term, there will be more than enough political fallout to spread around.

?

Get Your Home Clean and Organized This Weekend

Get Your Home Clean and Organized This WeekendNo one likes a cluttered house. But, unfortunately, no one likes cleaning a cluttered house either, especially when it's so hard to keep clean. Take some times this weekend to declutter once and for all, and figure out an organizational scheme that works for you.

Step One: Get Rid of Your Crap

Get Your Home Clean and Organized This WeekendBefore you can have a truly organized house, you need to purge all the stuff you don't need. Before you do anything, form an attack plan. One of the best ways to declutter your home is to create a detailed inventory, and we've shared lots of solutions for doing so in the past. Once you've highlighted all the things you can downsize, it's time to get to work. Check out our guides on kicking your clutter habit for good and de-crapifying your home to get started. Your home office is probably its own beast, so be sure to dedicate specific time to that with our guide to getting out from under your office crap, and organizing those piles of paper into something manageable. Once you've gotten rid of the clutter you don't need, you'll be much better off when it comes to organizing everything else. Photo by Sandra Cohen-Rose and Colin Rose.

Find Better Ways to Organize Your Stuff

Get Your Home Clean and Organized This WeekendNow that you've gotten rid of the crap, it's time to organize the stuff you have left to make it more useful to you during your day. Once again, form a good plan of attack before you do anything else. Go through all your leftover stuff and make sure each item has a home. If you aren't sure where to put something, don't waste time on it. Put it in a clutter bucket that you can decide on after you're done with everything else. If you need help keeping everything clean, there are a lot of gadgets that can help, as well as stuff you probably already have lying around.

Go through each room and see where the weak points are. Too much clutter spreading itself through your house? Get a landing strip for the front door. Can't find anything in your desk drawers? Organize them by a hierarchy of importance. Fill dresser drawers front to back so you can see everything inside, and find a place for your kitchen stuff that keeps floating around your cupboards (like pot lids).

Remember though, the object isn't to get everything picture-perfect. That's a waste of time. The goal is to get everything just organized enough so that you can find and access everything you need in a timely fashion. Sometimes, that means de-organizing: your silverware or sock drawers don't always need to be separated and organized perfectly, for example. You'll spend more time organizing them than you ever would searching for the right thing when you need it.

Make Sure You Keep It Clean

Get Your Home Clean and Organized This WeekendOnce you've gone through all that work, you probably won't ever want to do it again, so now comes the (seemingly) hardest part: keeping everything clean and organized. It's much easier than it seems, though: in fact, by putting all those chores on autopilot, you can keep everything clean with what feels like minimal amounts of work. For example, instead of striving for perfection and going through big cleaning sessions every once in a while, just clean up 15 minutes a day. After 15 minutes, stop. You'd be surprised how quickly you get to perfection with such little effort. Every time you leave a room, take one item that doesn't belong there with you. And, every night, reboot your office to make sure you come back to a clean workspace in the morning. A few minutes a day is all it takes to keep everything clean and organized for the long haul, and once you've worked it into your daily routine, it'll be so easy to keep up you won't even notice you're doing it. Good luck!

New Bill Would Prohibit EDC From Loan Guarantees | WPRI.com

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP/WPRI) -- A bill introduced in the Rhode Island House would prohibit the state's economic development agency from guaranteeing loans like the one to Curt Schlling's now-defunct video game company.
??
Under Representative Joseph Shekarchi's bill, the Economic Development Corporation would not be able to guarantee any loans and obligations. The Warwick Democrat says it would provide greater financial protection for the state and its taxpayers.

The EDC board approved a $75 million loan guarantee for Schilling's startup, 38 Studios, in 2010. The company later went bankrupt, and the state is likely on the hook for some $100 million related to the deal.

If the legislation is approved, Representative Shekarchi says it will not affect the way the EDC functions or restrict the job the agency does.

?They can still make contracts, make loans, execute lease agreements, acquire property, undertake planning and development of projects, and the like,? said Shekarchi.
??
Shekarchi says the bill isn't just about the former Red Sox pitcher's company, though the state learned a painful lesson.
??
The bill has been referred to the Finance Committee.

The singer swapped the stage for the catwalk on Saturday night as she presented her debut collection for high street shop River Island at the Old Sorting Office in Central London.

The show, which featured bra tops, thigh-split skirts and boots, was one of the most anticipated events of London Fashion Week.

Speaking backstage after the show, Rihanna said: "The girl that would wear this is full of personality, full of sass, but just loves fashion ? most of all, they love fashion.

"They want to express themselves through what they wear and that's what I like to do."

Samsung expected to hold Galaxy S4 event on Mar 14

Samsung Booth

On the eve of HTC's much-teased February 19th event, multiple sources are converging on March 14th as the announcement date for Samsung's next flagship Galaxy S device. Originally eluded to by Eldar Murtazin of mobile-review and later corroborated by unnamed sources of The Verge, the Galaxy S4 will "definitely" be announced at a Samsung event on March 14th. The rumored event is expected to take place in the U.S., but it's unclear at this time what city will be hosting such an announcement.

As for the design and details of the Galaxy S4, we really don't have much to go on. Again reported by sources of The Verge, the new device may follow the design language of what we will see as the Galaxy Note 8.0 at MWC. Although the leaks we've seen thus far of that device are apparently far off from what the final design is.

With all of that being said, we'll only know the announcement date for sure when we hear it directly from Samsung.

Russians investigating adoptee's death in Texas

DALLAS (AP) ? Russian authorities have blamed "inhuman treatment" for the death of a 3-year-old boy adopted by an American family, but Texas officials say they are still investigating claims that the child was abused before his death.

Russia's Investigative Committee said Monday that it had questions about the death of an adoptee authorities identified as Maxim Kuzmin. The committee is the country's top investigative agency.

Texas Child Protective Services spokesman Patrick Crimmins confirmed the agency had received a report on Jan. 21 of the death of a 3-year-old named Max Shatto, and that the Ector County Sheriff's Office in West Texas was investigating.

Crimmins said CPS had received allegations of physical abuse and neglect, but had not determined whether those allegations were true. Sgt. Gary Duesler, spokesman for the Ector County Sheriff's Office, said no arrests have been made and authorities are waiting for autopsy results.

An obituary for Max Shatto published Jan. 26 by the Midland Reporter-Telegram says he was born on Jan. 9, 2010, in the town of Pskov, near Russia's western border with Estonia. The boy lived with a family in Gardendale, about 350 miles west of Dallas, before his death on Jan. 21, according to the obituary.

The boy's listed adoptive parents, Alan and Laura Shatto, did not return a phone message Monday.

The death comes weeks after Russia announced it was banning all American adoptions in retaliation for a new U.S. law targeting alleged Russian human-rights violators. The ban also reflects lingering resentment over the 60,000 Russian children adopted by Americans in the past two decades, of which at least 19 have died.

Russian Foreign Ministry official Konstantin Dolgov said in a statement that the boy's death was "yet another case of inhuman treatment of a Russian child adopted by American parents."

Duesler said he could not immediately confirm or deny Russian allegations of abuse. Most U.S. government offices were closed Monday in observance of a federal holiday.

Dolgov also accused the U.S. Department of State of not helping Russian consular officials investigate the death. A State Department official said the government is aware of the case and "takes very seriously the welfare of children, particularly children who have been adopted from other countries."

"We will continue to assist the Russian Embassy and consulate officials in making contact with the appropriate authorities in Texas," said the State Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the matter.

Crimmins said the Russian consulate had contacted Child Protective Services.

An Overview on Workouts and Intensity! | Gain Quick: Gain & Build ...

Any exercise program requires a substantial long-term commitment.? No one can get the results they want right away, whether their?fitness goal is to improve their?health or physical appearance.

Jumping into a strenuous workout?from a relatively relaxed pace is almost always ill advised.? Gradually increasing the strenuousness of your workout is a far better strategy for producing?ideal results.

Adhering?to a moderate exercise routine is always better than none at all, even if you maintain the same level of activity throughout.? Nevertheless, gradually?increasing the intensity of your workout is a worthwhile fitness goal.

If you are engaged in aerobic exercises like walking at a pace of about three miles per hour for thirty minutes most days of the week, this?is a good photo intensity_zps0e003080.jpg start.? Every few weeks, either increase the time spent walking or the pace?which will increase the intensity of the workout.

You could decide to?start carrying free weights during?your walk, which will force?your body?to use more energy while maintaining the same pace.? Anaerobic exercises like weightlifting can be straightforward in terms of increasing the intensity:?gradually increase the amount of weight lifted during your session.

Image courtesy of marin at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

In your attempt?to build muscle you should focus on trying to be as healthy as possible in order to get the best results.

Getting eight to ten?hours of sleep per night?is of utmost importance for anyone engaged in extensive weight training.

The day before a workout, it is even more important to get enough sleep.? Some bodybuilders may use supplements to achieve better results.? Improved nutrition is also a very important factor in trying to build muscle.? Many bodybuilders will increase their protein intake?in addition to supplementing with vitamins and minerals.

The body needs fuel and rest, and bodybuilders need the best possible baseline when pushing their bodies to new heights.

Bodybuilders should always rest between sets for about a minute to a minute and a half.? Skipping rest periods will not necessarily produce faster results, and could actually be detrimental in the long-term.

Muscle cramps can slow down anyone?s workout, and proper muscle care is an important component of building muscle.

Increasing the weight helps?to up?the?difficulty of a weightlifting workout,?so too can increasing the number of repetitions per set.? Some people may even benefit more from a comparatively lighter weight?using more repetitions.? About a dozen repetitions per set?is typically enough to build muscle.

Whether you choose to increase the weight lifted or increase the repetitions is dependent upon your fitness goal.? At the end of the day, follow whichever technique suits you best.

Always remember to train safely and try to have fun!? Do you have anything to add? Questions? Leave a comment below.

Lynx A 3D camera hits Kickstarter, ready to motion capture your donations

Image

Every time we write up a 3D printer, we get a deluge of folks asking just how easy it is to render a 3D model. The answer is, unless you're well-versed CAD, not very. Austin-based Lynx Laboratories is working to help bring the learning curve for 3D rendering down a bit, with the Lynx A, a "point-and-shoot 3D camera" it claims is even easier to use than many standard digital cameras. The list of things the tablet-shaped device can do is impressive, indeed, including digital measure, architectural rending, object modeling and motion capture -- the latter of which has some interesting applications in the movie and gaming spaces. The project's Kickstarter is now open, steadily heading toward its $50,000 goal, with 44 days to go. A starting pledge of $1,799 will get you one of the 14-inch devices to call your own. Not convinced? Perhaps the video after the break will put you over the 3D edge.
